After the end of the American civil war in 1865 the passion of war turned to nation building. It’s important to understand the mind set of the political leadership at the time. There were no immediate foreign threats and the horizon now stretched beyond the Mississippi to California. What stood between was not an enemy but a civilization lost in time and not conscious of it significance. The American Indian stood between America and its manifest destiny. They were a proud and resilient people, surviving not because chance or good fortune, but in spite of it. Harsh conditions, inadequate technology and simply being outnumbered insured their fate.
Many here, for biased reasons usually, attempt to draw some parallel between Native Americans, Mexican Americans and what is happening with immigration today. Most are factually incorrect and ignore the real issues. There is simply no other parallel than that the same realty exists today for Mexican immigrants as for the American Indians over a century ago.
Long before 1890 and the massacre at Wounded Knee, the unofficial end of the Indian wars, the fate of American Indians had been decided (what else could they do, at wounded knee they just got shot like pigeons). They must be assimilated into America or destroyed. The method chosen was controlled isolation on reservations. After all they were not civilized and could not just be let loose into society. Probably most see this as a little weak in the assimilation area as it was intended to be. But America, and the vision of it leaders could not tolerate a society within a society especially one so foreign and unpredictable. The rule of law must apply to all, including the natives, so on the reservation you go.
Sound familiar? Today nation building is done and has been replaced by economic expansion; A different reality for a different time. The need for vast secure lands has been replaced by the need for vast cheap labor. As surely as the United States needed Colorado, Nevada and Montana it needs the labor resources of Sonora, Chihuahua, Durango and Sinaloa. The fate of Mexico is sealed; the great new American reservations which like the American Indian nations be consumed and assimilated. In a hundred years or less there won’t be a Mexico.
