Personal references for immigration interview?

I was told by my lawyer that i should get a "personal reference letter" from a friend. What should this letter say? How long should it be?

Answer:
Hello, If your lawyer advice you to get personal letter, why didn't he tell you what your friend should write on it? or what the immigration wants to read on it?
Well, it depends on what type of forms you're filing with the INS. The letter has to reference what you're filing about and if indeed you're who you said you are!
Most letter requaired from INS is not suppose to be from friends, it suppose to be an official with letter head of your company of school or some type of work that you do, for your affidavit of support.
I would advice you to ask your lawyer more carefully of where the letter should come from( friends or work or school) mostly work related; and then also ask him exactly what the INS needs to read on the letter so that you can instruct whoever is going to write the letter what to put on it.
Good luck!
