Generally, your friend should depart from the U.S. as soon as possible. Remaining in the U.S. beyond the period of authorized stay, and/or continuing to work in the U.S. without status can subject your friend to removal procedures. However, it's difficult to provide an accurate analysis without knowing more about your friend's situation.
Furthermore, if your friend continues to remain in the U.S. beyond the expiration date listed on his or her I-94 card, he or she may be in danger of being subject to what is known as the ''3/10 year bar'' for unlawful presence. Unlawful presence is defined as being in the United States after the period of stay authorized. If a foreign citizen is unlawfully present for six months, and then departs, he or she will be barred from returning to the U.S. for 3 years. If a foreign citizen is unlawfully present for a year or more, he or she will be barred for 10 years.

They should have already applied months before, they will probably be deported
If they are in the USA they should leave the country and make sure it is documented. Then they should sneak back into the country because the US gives illegals all kind of rights. People who jump through all the hoops to get into this country legally can be deported at the whim of the INS.
