I am an independent consultant. My client is a U.S. company with a division in Canada that needs my expertise. Besides a passport, what type of documentation do I need to occasionally enter Canada to work on behalf of my U.S. client at their Canadian division?
I've tried various Canadian sites with no success. Customs says all I need is a letter from my U.S. client, but was unclear about what should be included in that letter.
Answer:
The key element is that you are an employee of the US parent, that you are only temporally in Canada, that you are paid entirely by the US parent and that you have a degree and/or significant experience to prove that you know what you are doing.
The key thing is that you are not taking away some Canadian's job same as a Canadian going to the US under NAFTA.
A letter works fine if it is from the Canadian Division rather than the US parent. It should include a contact in Canada.
