Racism is fun as long as it is directed at white folks; otherwise it is offensive.
I am American, born here, raised here and will live here until I die. I could care less about what the illegals call me, just shows their ignorance. Thing is, we have what they want and they will never get it, we fought for it, we made it, we support it and we will die for it.. America. Name calling solves nothing, action does. Vote in November and get rid of every person in Congress that voted to pass the bill. Meanwhile , email, fax or call and do not stop, let Congress know how we feel.
As a Hispanic, I never say "gringo", we use to call Americans "gabachos" . I don't even know why, but this word is not offensive neither is "gringo".
What happen here is that in Spanish we can not call Americans "Americanos" because we call ourselves Americanos from The Rio grande (Rio bravo) to La Patagonia, Argentina.
But if "gringo" is offensive for you, i'll really think about it.

The rest of the continent ( well maybe not canada) don't call you americans, because america it's the whole continent, and the Brazilian native people for instance its more american i think, so Gringo it's a word developed during the WW, and it have something to do with the green uniforms of the USA army green go! idk how did the people started calling people from the US gringos or yeah Gabachos, but nor gringo or gabacho are insults, if people wich speaks spanish wanted to insult you peolple they'll be saying something different, like culeros or putos, etc, i find more insulting redneck as a matter of fact. however i use the word estadounidenses.

Well, if I take the definition of the dictionary (Royal Academy of the Spanish Language), they define "gringo" officially as the name of a foreign person , whose language we can´t understand, specially English speaking people.
I think this definition is not correct, because we never call gringo the Chinese or the Nigerian people.
I call gringo the people from USA, because I can´t call them Americans (we are from the American Continent too), so it is easier for me, without sound myself like an i d i ot, (how sounds a Canadian, who calls another Canadian, Canadian?).
But, because like when we see Asiatic people (everybody seems to have the same face), we are not very good to see the difference between a German, Gringo, Canadian or Englishman, so we call all them gringo.
Some people tried to find the origin of the word and meant, that it comes from the USA Invasion of Mexico, the soldiers had green uniforms, and the civil people tell them "greens go!", but there is not a fact about it.
It is an insult only when we put a curse next to, like "gringo p e n d e j o"
But in the same way, if we see a cute gringo, it receive too a nice word next to, like: "gringo precioso"
So, my dear gringo, don´t make yourself uneasy about something which is not important, I think is better to keep your energy to make your countymen have conscience , that only when they stop to giving a job to the illegal immigrants, they will stop coming.
Gringo is not a term of endearment,that's a lie. It's a racial slur and I totally agree with the poster. If the hispanics keep up the racism towards us,they should expect us to react in a negative manner. They bring our dislike upon themselves.

I'm a "gringo" and think it is insulting, just as much as being called a "white girl" in Spanish, like I don't know what it means.
