Early each morning, a familiar scene takes shape north of Escondido and South Santa Fe avenues.
Day laborers, most wearing baseball caps, jeans and weathered work boots, gather in front of the Von's shopping center to wait for a job offer that may or may not come. The size of the daily cluster ranges from fewer than 10 to more than 50, and thins out as the afternoon nears, according to employees and business owners in the complex.
The shopping center's lone security guard meanders from one small pocket of men to another, asking those who have strayed too far into the parking lot to move back to the sidewalk or onto the grass strip near the curb. The men usually oblige without complaint, but by the time the guard reaches the end of the line, some have already strayed back, and the cycle repeats.
The action picks up when cars or pickup trucks pull into the lot and drivers roll down their windows. The laborers surge toward them, hands in the air. After a brief discussion, a few men climb inside and the vehicles pull away. Those left behind drift back toward the sidewalk and continue to wait.
Who are they?
Day laborers are primarily employed by homeowners and construction contractors for painting, landscaping, gardening and other forms of manual labor, according to a nationwide study of day laborers, released last month.
The study's authors, social scientists from UCLA, the University of Illinois at Chicago, and New York's New School University, surveyed 2,660 day laborers at 264 sites in 20 states and the District of Columbia during July and August 2004.
Based on the interviews, the report estimates three-quarters of day laborers are illegal aliens.. Most are full-time day laborers, unlikely to bring in more that $15,000 a year.
The police respond when called,they tell them to move on,they disapear and as soon as the cops are gone they are back again.
Most businesses do not want them but are almost powerless to do anything about them.Some businesses have taken a stand and forbiden the illegals from being on their property.,They simple go to another spot at another business.They need to arrest both the illegal alien and the person that hires them.They both are comiting a crime.I dont know why something cant done .It boggles the mind.
It is a form of discrimination (I agree) but if you try to tell the day laborers to leave, they will leave, but they'll come back 5 minutes later, and then claim that you are racist for making them leave in the first place.

If they are in a parking lot and the company allows it, nothing can be done. We can boycott and not shop there like we did at Home Depot here in my city. They don't hang around there anymore. I believe some of the business owners who hired them got together and provided a shelter for them somewhere.
Home Depot started losing too many customers. Not only were the potential customers complaining but the other businesses in that S/C complained. Their business was suffering due to the rude, filthy remarks and leering aimed at female patrons to those businesses.
Most decent Americans won't get out and sell themselves on a street corner, except a prostitute and even they can be arrested if they are caught offering it for a price.

yes it is. what we need to do is do what they are doing and when we are told to leave because we are loitering and soliciting, we can get a lawyer and sue the hell out of the company for discrimination.
