buy an airline ticket and you will be told. It depends on which state you want to go.
To gain entry you need at least 6mth after you come home on your passport.
when you fly to the USA and you have a British passport you will fill a green waver visa form out on the plane, this allows you entrance without having to get a visa from the embassy.
you will have to know if possible the hotel, road and area of where you are staying. this must be filled in with a black pen and must not have any mistakes on. if you make a mistake ask the stewardess for another (you will not be allowed in if there are any on it you will have to go back to the end of the line while you fill another out) when you get to USA the immigration are not usually that friendly!!! make sure you apply with everything they ask.... e.g. don't take food into country etc etc
although if you have criminal record you need to contact the embassy to check the guidelines. further more ask a travel agent
