Oh yes. English speakers expect everyone to be able to speak their language, and get impatient with people who can't/won't.
Whatever country you want to live in you should be able to speak the language.
no, we are just cynicla. we ALWAYS believe the worst WILL happen, its a double edged sword everytime.

I believe that if you immigrate to a country, you should be able to speak the language. So YES, you must learn English.
Here in the US I think we let in FAR too many people who DONT know English and REFUSE to know English. Try going to any other country and immigrate - they wont let you in unless you first pass a language test and some wont even acknowledge you unless you know the local culture and history as well, or even live there for 20 years or more.
I think the English speaking regions have been over-tolerant of those that speak other languages in allowing them to immigrate all this time.
Perhaps the British just don't believe humankind has a future! We haven't if you read and believe all the doom makers who hark on about global warming. With regard to the 'non EC' question and it's huge response - anything that gives rise to what I consider rather disturbing, right wing racist comments, goes down well on this site. I bet a huge % of those answering suggested all manner of nasty things . . .
To be prepared for globalization everbody has to learn english.
In germany if you want to immigrate you have to learn the german language, after you passed "tricky" constitution conformity and knowledge tests.

You should be able to speak the language of the country you intend to live or work in.
It won't matter in 50 years as there will be more migrants and immigrants than British born and bred living here, who knows what will be the common language of Britain.
we are not confused but missled by our goverment going in to the future. yes non EC immigrants should speak english when they live here. as far as british people living in spain for the most part we contribute billions to the spanish economy and we contribute more than we take from them. When in europe i have noticed that spanish, italians, french, polish, and other nationalities use English as a bridge to comunicate

The US has the same problem. We have many, many immigrants that cannot speak English and don't care to learn how.

Immigrants should be forced to speak English after a year living here. If they object to it, deport them back to their country. Same with Brits.
It is not just the language, we are importing millions of people from countries which are economic, political and often cultural disasters. It beats me how we are supposed to believe these people can "help" the UK. Yes it seems we can use them as a short term cheap workforce but come the inevitable recession they will be a burden on this country. The UK now has over 60,000,000 people, take my advice and keep of the streets when(not if) a recession comes.Honest UK people with guts will tell you we don't want the dramatic ethnic change either.
