Can I leave the US while my petition to change from a TN to an H1-B is being considered?

I'm applying to change my status from TN to H1B in April. This is while I am in the US. I have been told that if I leave the US during the time that this petition is being considered, I will forfeit the petition.

One of my co-workers mentioned that this is not necessarily true. That the petition can be filed in such a way that I can still leave and re-enter the US while it is being considered. Does anyone have an idea of the location in the US visa policy that will help me determine if this is possible?
Thanks!

Answer:
it is recommnded to not travel while your change of status is pending. if possible wait till you get the approval/decision on your case.
Yes. Just be sure to get back before the wall is built....I hope I don't sound too much like a parent.
You can.But don't do it unless it's absolutely necessary. There is a big risk that they will not let you to re-enter. Any lawyer will tell you that.
