We need to do 3 things:
1) Get control of our borders. This means barriers & a greatly expanded border patrol.
2) Enforce laws against hiring illegals.
3) Enact legislation to set realiastic limits for LEGAL immigration.
mass deportation of all illegals.
I do believe it is already in the works. Remove the borders from Alaska to the tip of S. America. Allow any and all to move freely from one nation to the other. Allow Anyone who can pay for it to buy and own property anywhere in the western hemisphere. There would be a short time of adjustment however it would soon balance out. Screech, think about it. The next currency could/may be called the Amero.
I have a two-part answer to this one.
First, if you are American, you need to realize that this is an issue that has been put forward, with "danger" signals all around it, in order to try to deflect your attention from the miserable failures of foreign policy and the military.
Second, you need to realize that your government used xenophobia to get you to accept the hype.
All they have to do is ENFORCE our current laws! Jail the employers so there are no jobs. Deport illegals and none of this "catch and release" crap. The wall will help because it WILL be a deterrent - why make it easy for them?
Please remember that when you say you would legalize people without a "criminal record," there is a problem with that. ALL illegal aliens are criminals because they have broken our laws. That means, by your statement, we can't legalize anyone that is here ILLEGALLY.

The UN has no say so what we do here in America to secure our borders. Realistically I would like the idea of the detention centers to process them for deportation. The ones to go first are the ones that do not work and need assistance. The ones that have stolen an identity should serve in Jail then be deported. We have tolerated this BS long enough. It will be hard at first, but it will get easier.
Copy Mexican law. Illegal immigrants in Mexico do hard time behind bars.

The best way to solve this, not politically viable for anyone in the south, but in reality the only true solution is to open it up. legalize it. However, everybody sends in paperwork and goes to a new Ellis island center where records are checked. if you have no criminal records, you're good. Let economics do the rest. It would be good for both countries.
If they were legal, there would be less. you would have to pay minimum wage, and if you didn't, we would prosecute.
And one more thing: punishment for breaking this on either side would be extremely harsh. Jail sentence then deportation tough. And the employer who breaks it has to go to the same naiton as the illegal.

We must enforce the laws we have. If you believe that they are not enforceable then you must also believe that we should not enforce any laws because people will always commit crimes. Of course we cant stop every one from crossing illegally but we cant stop every bank robbery ether but we try .
First of all, we have to quit throwing border patrol agents in prison for enforcing the law. second, if he make it a felony to employ illegals, there would be no jobs for them to take. Third, we have to quit giving illegals benefits paid by us taxpayers. And finally, we need to take over Mexico, replace their corrupt government with ours and make it one of the richest countries on the planet.
Think about it, if California has the 7th largest economy in the world, Mexico could at least be the sixth.
You kinda answerd your own question when you mentioned the Berlin Wall... When the Wall came down- the inequities between the two sides gradually melted away because there was no longer any reason for the East Germans to flee to the West. If we can help Mexico improve its economic situation- then fewer & fewer Mexicans will come cross the border looking for jobs here. In other words, invest in Mexican businesses- are we'll be helping ourselves. I think THAT's the way to go towards stemming the flow of mexican border crossers.
The US needs some more powerful punishment for illegals.
1. Deny housing
2. Deny medical
3. Deny food
4. Deny schooling
The answer is simple: Illegals come here for work. Check workers to make sure they are here legally, if they are not, they can't work.
If they can't work, they will go home.
The problem is business wants them here so they sponsor legislation that APPEARS to be tough on immigration (fences, border guards), knowing that it is easy to cross over (with a tourist visa, etc). Once here they simply get a job and stay. It would be easy to verify a workers immigration status and hold employers accountable for illegal workers.
Funny you say legalization of all who do not have a felony, but isn't knowingly using a fake or stolen ID, and SS card a felony. And who says a fence would not work. No a fence alone would not work, but a fence with enforcement of all immgration laws would work. Then deportation of all illegals in our country.
Cut benefits to any illegal completely. No benefits of any kind.
Strictly and strongly enforce and prosecute businesses hiring illegals.
Create a better managed guest worker program that tracks the person and they pay taxes.
Set legal immigration standards and amounts to managable levels like the USA used to have and like many other countries do have.
To sum it up. cut back on the immigration thats done 'legally' to levels the USA can handle.
Let people work here as long as they behave and we can keep track of them.
Make it SO hard for an illegal to get anythin at all in the USA that they wont come anymore.
Oh and I forgot. remove the anchor baby law.
It amazes me how people are so for the liars and cheaters (aka illegal aliens) and want to give them amnesty.

We need to remove the reason for illegals being here. If we simply enforce the rules on the books, we'd have no problem.
Don't provide any benefits for illegals and interpret the 14th amendment as intended. Fine people who hire/house illegals the maximum amount.

What opposition? The only one is Mexico, and they REALLY have a lot to stand on there with their refusal to close the border or even to AID in closing it. All the illegals NEED to be sent back to their countries and come into the US LEGALLY...that includes medical checks to make sure that they don't have any diseases and a criminal check to make sure they don't have anything in their past like drug dealers and theft. The safety of the US DEPENDS on the USA doing the above.

I have seen it all as I am a caucasion male single dad with two children, and I cant get 1/2 of what they get, as the entire system is set up specifivcally for ethnic females (specifically hispanic / latino) I even have a hispanic female friend (of many many years) agrreing fully with me that if I were a hispanic female I wouldnt have 1/2 the problems I do with the system!!!!!!!! Our country is getting more and more messed up every single day...., and the worst thing we do is allow people from 3d world countries to immigrate here...., everything really went to crap with the late 80s / early 90s asian invasion....... the entire city I grew up in is now "little Asia" and the crime rate is 100 times fold from when I lived there..... due to gangs, the entire area (which was kinda nice when I was younger) now resembles a nasty scummy slum!!!!!!!!!!

Bush has already "solved" the immigration problem by signing the political component of the North American Union. Just an electronic "speedbump" will man what used to be our borders. The NAU is inevitable, and hopefully eventually good for all the people in the union. But, having sustained a poor, second-class segment of our society for so long has caused serious problems. But, they most certainly CAN be realistically addressed. First of all, we must stop repeating the mistakes that we made in the past. The BIGGEST of those mistakes was not to REALISTICALLY address the potential problems! Bigots beat down all efforts twenty years ago to implement bilingual educational programs designed to help the youngest children transition into English skills. We MUST stop being that stupid and mean-spirited. Every community should always assume the responsibility for insuring that EVERY child in that community gets a proper education. Poorly educated children do not grow up to be productive citizens, or, at least they do not reach their greatest potential and worth to a community. It's just plain DUMB not to educate children and do our best by them. Also, the middle class needs to get more involved in reality. Twenty years ago was when people should have addressed these problems. Apathy and laziness got us into this mess in the first place. People need to get SERIOUSLY involved in their PTA's, their city governments, their state governments. And they need to stop thinking we can go backwards. They need to stop FOILING sensible community planning simply because they want the "good old days" back or because they want everything to be for THEIR benefit only. We have to work together for the COMMON good. The old way of sabotaging all responsible long-term and sensible planning must become socially unacceptable behavior. And, we have to live by the law of this land, not the law of the jungle. There's so much to lose by tearing down what stability and order we have by fighting among ourselves. The forces that merrily led us all here like sheep do not have to have the last laugh. If every man and woman from whichever side of a stupid border they come from stood by each other and started building a coalition of common sense and decency, we'd have NO problems whatsoever in less than a year, if we got serious. . .AND, we'd have the clout to give those "powers-that-be" a few problems of their own.
