Answer:
I don't know if this answers your question, but the bf has duel status on his passport. When he applied he had proof that his grandparents as well as his father were born in Scotland...you may check into that if it's an option.
Visit first for an extended period of time...there's a reason your ancestors came here. Find out if it still exists.
WHY?????
You think our Taxes and Gas prices are high? Ha! Good Luck! But, our government is getting there.
Your heritage? Your ancestors wisely left Scotland because they wanted their children to live in the United States, probably for its freedom and opportunities. Like it or not, your 'heritage' is American. You're a product of American laws and culture. Nobody in Scotland would consider you a compatriot. It's not like your parents are from Scotland, either. You're talking about distant relatives, most of whom (if not all) died before you were born. What do you really have in common with the Scottish other than your genes? Not much.
Your ancestors probably moved here to escape the haggis and bagpipe music. If you must go, then you will want to have some of your teeth made crooked so you won't stand out so much. (just kidding, they're good people...just a bit of craic ;-) )
Apply for a tourist Vista and see how you like it.
Just turn up. everyone else does.
P.s. I'd give it a miss, Tony's turned it into a festering dump
