For USA....Do immigrants...legal or otherwise..know who wrote The Star Spangled Banner?

Should they?Does it matter to you? It matters to me!

Answer:
They should, and it does matter to me. I went to a baseball game in Pueblo, CO, and they played the Mexican national anthem. Then, and only after load protests, they played ours. To hell with the illegals !! Get them out of here !! We are falling America !!
Vote for Tom Tancredo !

AND, Sorry metro900, you could not do enough to make me feel stupid. I am a legal American citizen. Now who feels stupid?.
Francis Scott Key...and I am an undocumented brought here as a kid by my parents.feel stupid now?

watch all the americans copying my answer now :)
Do Americans who were born American?
Anybody on this website has access to the internet...and any question's answer is seconds away via the internet...doesn't mean anybody "knows" the answer before you ask...
Flaco Jimenez and Freddy Fender along with Texas Tornados. "Hey baby que paso, thought I was your only vato".

Skydog," How about if you got the dinero, I got the camaro" or
"Laredo Rose you got the scent of cheap perfume"

BarB, your avatar looks cute when you are flaring dramatic.
Can't we come up with a better National Anthem than that written by some lawyer putting words to an English Drinking Song... How about Guantanamera? Free Bird?
Are you serious? My ancestors came over on the Mayflower & I had to think for a minute before I remembered. Who cares if people know who wrote the song? How immigrants are contributing (or not) to our society is far more important than knowing that worthless piece of trivia.
If they went thru legal means of becoming a citizen, I would think that that would be a question asked. The illegals could care less.
I can not believe the stupidity in so many answers, I have come to the conclusion, that most of you are children that know nothing. Adults should not be that, stupid, illiteracy in most countries were people that were not given a chance to education,. In America it is people that had gone through the the educational system and show the results of the failure in American education. How sad.
So it matters to you, huh? So, I'll bet you can't recite all the words...bet you don't know that there are FOUR verses and that it was originally a poem.

Bet you don't know when it was written, by whom and on what occasion.

Bet you don't know WHY is was written.

I can recite the 10 Commandments - that doesn't mean I am religious... I also can recite the UCMJ which was pounded into my head by the Marine Corp more years ago than I want to remember.---I know what these things mean.

While you are at it, do you know when the Pledge of Allegiance was written, on what occasion and why? Do you know when it was turned from a patriotic pledge about love of country to a religious statement and why?

Lay off the immigrants. Before they can become citizens, they must read, write and speak English and pass a citizenship test that YOU and many others couldn't pass even if you had weeks to prepare.and YOU are an American.
I agree with Daniel F.

Francis Scott Key
NO! I HAVE MORE IMPORTANT THINGS TO WORRY ABOUT?
Better question: Do they know the lyrics, and will they remove their hats, stand up, and sing along at the Fourth of July festivities?
It would be ironic if an immigrant knew more about our National Anthem than most Americans do. It would be even more ironic if they knew that the melody is an English Drinking song, Commonly known as "To Anacreon in Heaven" and that it is well known in England, that you pretty much have to be toasted in order to attempt it's punishing range unless you are a trained singer.

In his song "Country Anthem" Hoyt Axton wrote:

"I'd like to sing my Country's Anthem
But the Words don't mean a thing
Old Frank Key, the guy who wrote them
Obviously, Didn't Sing!"

It would be downright comical to find out how many people of any Nationality know that our pledge of Allegiance was originally a Socialist Manifesto written by a defrocked Baptist Minister.

The words "under God" were inserted by an act of Congress in response to constant lobbying by factions of the Catholic Church. This was against the wishes of the author, and in defiance of our Country's own Copyright laws since the author, Francis Bellamy, is no longer given credit for his work, and the fact that the work has been altered is never mentioned.

"In 1954, Congress after a campaign by the Knights of Columbus, added the words, 'under God,' to the Pledge. The Pledge was now both a patriotic oath and a public prayer."

Oh well, so much for separation of church and state! Maybe you should learn a little more about the things you claim to care so much about!
