Course change in UK with student visa ...?

If someone is in the UK with student visa (for PhD)- but finds the research topic non-interesting after arrival what can he do? Can he change the University to find a new research area / course (with the same visa)? Does it have anything to do with visa. The initial visa was for 36months. Does he need to worry about visa within this 36 months if he changes the University? In other word Will it affect his visa if he changes the University
