Besides a comprehensive immigration reform, What can the US do to gain respect from Latin America?
Answer:
First dozen answers here were, "who gives a damn?"
That seems like a pretty typical american response. We don't care what other nations think.
Well, I do care. I think the first thing we should do to gain international respect would be to apologize to all the nations of the world for our unprovoked war. Then we should apologize for the lies we told to promote that war, and sell it to the american public. No other nation was too stupid to buy into our lies.
Then our administration should tender their resignations. That is the president, vice president, and his entire cabinet. Whether or not any of them submit to an international tribunal on war crimes--I'll leave that issue alone for now.
I think only then would america earn a measure of respect in the eyes of other nations. Until then, we're just the big mean bully that does whatever the hell we please, without the slightest care of who we have to kill or maim or torture to get what we want.
You know, Iraq has oil. Pretty stupid of them not to have simply given it to us when we told them to, instead of fighting us for what they thought was rightfully theirs. Silly fools!
Why do we care if we have their respect?
I know we could build 2,000 miles of fence, we could enforce the Immigration laws and start deporting illegals from Latin America home...
To be honest, I think they'd RESPECT us more if we enforced our laws and protected our sovereignity.
Like us, no. RESPECT us, yes.
Who cares? If Latin America chooses not to respect the U.S., that is of no consequence to me. I don't respect them either!
i have to agree with the other answers....who cares what Latin America thinks? i mean, my god, is this how it all ends for us? are we really worrying what people in Bolivia think about our foreign policy? i can't believe this question is really being asked. what is next, questions about what we can do to get back the respect of the good people of Cameroon?
We already have their respect. And they have ours. There is a lot more going on between the two countries than that what meets the eye. They are a wonderful people and deserve the respect they have earned from everyone and need no invitation to be respected from anyone.
Benito Juarez said "Respect that which is not yours is Peace"
Elect a woman as president for one, something many Latin American countries have been doing for a while. Second, get this retarded president out of office. He is putting so many human beings in harms way because his cronies want to get rich off this ridiculous war. Say what you will about Latin American countries, but they laugh at us when we make a big fuss about Janet Jackson's breasts in the superbowl. The United States is still stuck in the Victorian Era and we need to move forward into modern times with a broader perspective in life.
They respect the States - Bush is another story. But then, no sane and educated person has any respect for him and such thugs anyway.
Assist Latin America in becoming in a much greater degree the destination for Americans on Vacation and doing business. In other words, America sponsoring a much larger roll in Countries to the South.
America could with enhanced security and investment design and implement a plan which brings the America's closer together economically, social and governmentally. This would benefit all the people of the Americas.
secure and inforce the laws and the border, like the "machismo" of latin America, earn thier respect by setting example. We need to toughen up,tell 'em to go to hell and let them be on the defense, especially since we gained our great country alone without there help
How about, what can Latin America do to gain the respect of the USA? How about stop sending their poor here illegally and, instead, start taking care of their own and providing a decent education and jobs that pay a liveable wage? That would be a great start to Latin America gaining our respect.
Well for starters.Respect the will of the people.Any tyrant can try to overthrow the elected govt,Pinochet was a prime example in Chile.OK so this guy in Venezuela is grandstanding. So what.If people elect a communist govt.let them live with it.It's thier choice. Not only in Sth America, worldwide .Communism collapsed in the USSR.China is moving towards a market economy.
I gain my childrens respect not by caving in to their every whim.....But by Enforcing the Rules!
It's just that simple!
Its not up to American to gain respect.. it's up to Latin America to give respect. We've done everything but throw them a ticker tape parade and make illegals war hero's.. i'm sick of spineless politicians doing nothing. America is a respectable nation, yeah we have problems, but we are the greatest country on earth for that very reason, L.A. needs to respect us, and how should we help them.. put up the fence and show them that we respect our own laws as should they.
As Confucious said " Respect is the result of *** kickings given many times over." Wise words old sage, wise words indeed.
who cares if they respect us or not, but the real question is how do they get us to respect latin america? most of the people from latin america think they are the best thing that happened to the world, they are a bunch of druggies, stupid, because they are to scared to stand up and make their countries a better place, so i guess that would make them cowards. just think if we had never stood up to england, france, mexico, where would we be now, just like them, a bunch of cowards.
We can start by enforcing our existing immigration laws and insisting that Latin America respect them. Immigration reform for America is not and never will be equal to open borders and an excuse to break our laws. Interference with U.S. sovereignty and non compliance with its laws should result in penalties. That should work.
There are many things the United States has to do to gain respect from any country in the world, and yes the US needs the respect greatly from the Latin American countries becasue they are US neighbors, all of these countries are in America, so it is of best interest of the US to have respect from every country especially Latin America.
