The politics, complacency and possible National Disaster of Racism in the South?

After living in the south for most of my life I would have to say that racism in the south is such a way of life there that many folks just don’t see themselves as racist. To them a racist is someone that beats or kills another person because of their race. They don’t consider the other part of racism to really be legitimate concerns. Like not hiring somebody based on race or arresting them based on race. Or schooling them differently because of their race.

I remember when I first moved to Florida the kids in class asked me “Are you a Yankee or a Rebel”, Being born in Texas I was okay, I wasn’t a yankee. Growing up watching this same mentality blossom into hate, fear and race riots in high school I was disgusted. Not to mention that many of the African Americans in the south have become so used to being discriminated against that they too consider some levels of racism as necessary evils to the point where they too have strong racist feelings against their white neighbors.

Answer:
I live in Tampa Bay and I couldnt agree with you more...people dont realize that without illegals Florida could never grow at the rate that it has today...the people that like to live in reality know that.

down here racism is in peoples bloods...kids get it from their parents at an early age and grow up with that ideology...
okay!!..i guess everyone is an migrant in their own right.
You fail to see one important issue in the South, poverty. We are the poorest region in the whole country. Everyone is trying to get their share to feed their family. Some choose to break the law, and get caught. Unfortunately, percentage wise per population (ie. per 100,000) the Black and Hispanic communities commit the most crime. Furthermore, by a larger margin they are reliant on government aid. The Hispanic population is not helping itself either with the illegal immigrant problem, who further undercut jobs and public services. Put all this together, and you will see what the typical working middle or lower class white person might be a little racist.
Racists would certainly be upset with illegal immigration.

However, most of us who are not racist are upset with it too.
Let me tell you, I live in what is considered a "KKK" town in the south (I've never seen any sort of KKK rally or members in general) and we are becoming a racially diverse place. There are people who want to keep it whites-only. But those people are getting drowned out by supporters of diversity. So, it's getting better, in my opinion.
Up here in the north blacks get special treatment, like they are better then us :(
Historically, racial issues can only be solved through war.

The demographics in the region are changing, and eventually it will come to be an open confrontation.

No one obtains right by "begging for them" or being a good citizen and "deserving them." People only obtain rights by fighting for them. And that always involves much death and suffering.

But that's the way it is.
I live in the south and have spent a lot of time in various parts of the country. I can tell you without a doubt, New England is the most racist place I have ever been. Also I spent my early childhood in St. Louis county. I saw more racism there than here.
I could not agree with you more, racism in the south is the #1 problem. I was stationed in Ft Polk Louisiana in 1956, and hung out with blacks in the black part of Leesville, I was always stopped by the police and told you are in the wrong part of town (it may be a shock to you , Mexicans are Caucasians) my response to them was "look at my skin 'am I white."
America's problems are not immigration ,but racism.
Living in southern Kentucky i know what you are talking about but i feel like sometimes blacks bring racism on themselves. I cant explain it but they feel like they have to be handed everything in life just because their ancestors hundreds of years ago where slaves and it gets so annoying! You see all black history museums everywhere but you don't see all white history museums do you? No b/c that would be raciest because we are white.
I traveled to south before, and I only stayed there briefly. So I am not really qualify to say southern people are racist or not. However, I can see in YA, the rhetoric againsts the Latino is getting sicker and sicker. I worry history is repeating itself.
My friend, I was raised in Tampa,FL, lived there for 10 years (was born in Seattle,WA though) and I never had any problems with other people. I had white friends, black friends, hispanic friends, etc. and I never had any trouble. OK, I haven't been back there for over a decade and I don't know how things are now. In my family, racism is just not acceptable. Anyways, I think racism will eventually die in the South (and in FL). Thanks!
