I understand that I have to apply for a Green Card, what I don't understand is why do I have to get permission to live in the U.S. I own a business here in Canada and would make the daily commute back and forth, is this a better option? I also understand that once the paperwork is started I would have to stay in the U.S. and would not be allowed to leave, is this true? As it would be very difficult to run my business if I can't get there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Why would you want to Immigrate to the U.S.? Canada is infinitely better. I'm a U.S. citizen so I have the right to say so. While Canada might not have as big of a GDP. You guys still have more freedoms than we have here in the States. The quality of life is so much better where you live right now. Why would you want to move across the border now?
And it is true that you are not allowed to leave the country for 5 years. But you can still sneak across though. There are a lot of roads between here and Canada that aren't monitored. All it has is a call box with a video cam; and so all you would need to do is just drive right through without stopping.
