Coragryph is right to a point regarding, under current federal laws, states and cities are forbidden from enforcing federal immigration laws or discriminating against people based on their immigration status. But Coragryph failed to state that all laws can be challenged and reversed, the challenge can begin by the fact the illegal aliens are not immigrants they are illegal aliens. And if the States impose their own laws, they are not imposing Federal laws, but only State laws. And by the States efforts to apply certain laws regarding illegal aliens, the challenge has begun! These challenges can help the desire to change our current Federal Laws. Arizona is a good State to watch, and so are Utah, MIssouri, South Carolina, Georgia and Colorado. We just need the other 44 States to do the same. We need to prove to our Government that their lack of effort to impose the current laws against illegals, is causing a backlash, and making all the individual States to stand up, create their OWN laws and be noticed. If the States try to impose Federal law word for word they are in violation, but if they create their OWN laws, in their own words, then no violation is created.
The challenge is up to us the Citizens of the U.S.!

Like it or not, that's the current law. If people don't like the law, and think states should be able to regulate immigration, then they need to lobby Congress to change current federal laws.
But until federal laws are changed, these state efforts are going to result in little more than tons of legal challenges.
EDIT: You are welcome to disagree with my interpretation. But what I'm saying is what numerous federal courts have held so far in similar situations. So, believe what you will.

It is all going to hell.
They are unconstitutional because of federal preemption, if no t for being descriminatory based on national origin. I understand the states desire to do something, but these laws are no the right way. I believe they will be overturned in federal court. However, the real objective, scaring Latinos and getting them to move to another state, is probably going to work.
I've heard of states that are trying to get stiffer penalties in place. The really good one is in Texas - get rid of anchor babies (no auto citizenship). This will end up in the Supreme Court where we can hopefully get this issue resolved - the illegal alien criminals will loose one of their incentives to come here.
I just wish CA would do something instead of catering to a bunch of criminals. Arnold is a joke!
I live in Dallas. Farmers Branch, a suburb, recently passed an ordinance fining rentors who leased apartments to them. They also made English their official language. The Hispanics are sueing. I am curious to see what happens.
I, personally, am sick of their increasing numbers. I do not have any appreciation for a culture which practices no birth control, is filthy, steals, speaks no English, and refuses to learn, and brings illegal drugs into my country.
Constanc, you and your compadre white Americans were sick of it way before the prominent illegals showed up. I am living proof.The Dallas area is the worst for hispanic discrimination, I have ever seen. What ever happens to white Americans in that area is dearly deserved. I am glad I got to hear about it.

DAR from reading some of these post i can see alot of people don't know the Constitution. it is up to the individual states to make their own laws. and enforce them.
I think something needs to be done by SOMEONE about all the illegal aliens that are here...it will only get worse now that Mexican trucks can go where ever they want in these United States. If the Federal Government wont do their job, then that will fall on the States to do their job.
It's illegal for States and other institutions to enforce Federal Immigration laws.
Illegal is illegal, and they should not be doing that.
I personally feel that our Government is not strict enough by using its boarder patrol agents to send back its illegal aliens!!!!
