It seems almost unimaginable that one moment in this lonely place ignited the furor that rages still — from the blogosphere to Congress — two years later.
A jury convicted the agents of assault, obstruction of justice and civil rights violations. A federal judge meted out punishment: 12 years for Jose Alonso Compean; 11 for Ignacio "Nacho" Ramos. As the two men surrendered last month, demonstrators took to the streets, clutching U.S. flags and shrieking: "What kind of America do we have?"
Answer:
they should have shot the intruder dead. if they had done so they wouldn't be in prison. they should of been honored for stopping the drug pusher.
Those agents should have been given MEDALS not prison

The blindness of justice was demonstrated when those we assigned to defend this country are put on trial for doing their job. Politics had more to do with the who thing than justice. The other case of the sheriff's deputy that was also convicted proves how radical elements have blocked justice in pursuit of their weakening of our country. President Bush should give all three men a presidential pardon. PERIOD>
I agree with the first answer.
The kind of America we have is what Bush wants, its all part of keeping Mexico, big business happy, and getting his open borders. We need to, control our borders and ports, deport all illegal immigrants, and stop Bushs open borders plan. ( And for antis suck ) no buddie , they did not shoot a guy who was only looking for a better life. They shot a know drug runner. Drug dealers and runners, are some of the lowest life people in the world.

Let the border patrol do their jobs. If it means that some of those entering this country illegal die in the process, sorry, but that's the risk. I sound cold hearted at times, I do apologize. Stop breaking our Laws.

They got what they deserve , shooting a person 13 times and hiding the evidence is not right. If they were only doing their job then why did they go out of their way to hide the evidence?
It took Congress close to 6 moths to get the information about the case that they requested. The lies that were made already part of the evening news for the last several weeks.
What I can't understand is why these men are still in jail with just what has recently been revealed - let alone with what else is sure to come out.
At the very least, these men most def. should have a re-trial. At best, the injustice that clearly is starting to be revealed would have them totally free and restored to their position of being border guards.

The two BP agents told the truth and the prosecution bribed the drug smuggler to testify and bullied everyone else to lie.
The prosecution of course did not have to be bullied to lie, they did that on their own accord.

The real question here is not whether the agents are guilty or innocent, that is perfectly clear, but what is the motivating factor behind Johnny Sutton, Debra Kanof and George Bush.
(Sutton is a Bush appointee).

the jury must have been all for the illegals. they are commies. bored, if the illegal was shot 13 times he would be dead. what did they do shoot him 13 times in the rear?lmao.
It sounds like they shot a drug smuggler in the back, then tried to cover it up. They were convicted by a court of law and then given the mandatory 10 years that the law requires for crimes committed with firearms. :

"They're picking the wrong guys to make heroes," he said.
After 31 years in the Border Patrol, Ham heads up the retired agents' association in El Paso. Months back, a Border Patrol official gave the group an overview of the case against Ramos and Compean; Ham and some other retired colleagues have since refused to appear at vigils or news conferences in defense of the men.
"If we believe in what we believe — which is honor first, that's our motto — how can these two guys say they lived up to that?" he said.
The public's almost mythological image of the border, which reduces the reality of the region to a stereotype framed by "insecurities and anxiety," partly explains support for the agents, said Howard Campbell, a cultural anthropologist at The University of Texas at El Paso.
"It's good vs. evil," he said. "They think this is just one emblematic case of the border being out of control and taken over by drug smugglers ... and the United States is being invaded. That's the imagery. ... That overrides the facts."
Really, there are many greater injustices in the world to get upset about than border patrol agents going to jail for shooting someone in the back and trying to cover it up.
