What is the process of sponsoring my spouse for a "green card" in the US if I am a citizen but non-resident?
Answer:
welcome to the club. I'm also an American citizen currently living in Egypt with my husband. ur spouse can reside in USA before actually getting the green card. just start applying and schedule an interview. the process for her being able to legally reside in USA takes around 6-9 months. I have not done any paperwork for my husband yet, so I'm not totally sure how long it takes, but once we were planning to do so, and that's what we've been told
You cannot get a green card for your spouse until you both actually decide to move to the US. The US govt will not issue a green card "in case" you want to live in the US some day.
Once you decide to live in the US, you can begin the process. Usually, if you have been married outside the US for a few years, it is easier to prove a bona fide marriage, so the whole process is a little easier.
Also, you mentioned that you were born in Canada to 2 American parents. That does not automatically make you an American. Make sure that you have your certificate of citizenship and US Passport before you fill out any sort of paperwork for your spouse's immigration.
Don't waste your time. A Green Card is for an immigrant. You and your wife have no intention of living in the United States. Your application will be denied.
you have to wait until you move. you have to have residence in the US, and also show proof of financial support. i'm sorry, she won't be able to legally work right away, unless you want to be seperated, and you move first, and then file for her.
