Will Tony's plan for 24 hr surgery ever come to fruition or will the surgeons revolt?
Answer:
I think it's a great idea, I also think dentists should look at doing the same thing. The only problem is that surgeons and dentists get paid a fortune anyway, so why would they want to do shift work? I don't suspect there are enought of them that are willing to put themselves out for the people they are treating.
Nothing will happen - it's just another Labour fantasy and PR spin to try and get the population to think that the NHS can and is working - and it isn't.
It's just a sound bite. Hospitals are extending operating lists into the evening now, but 24hr operating will never happen. Except for emergencies obviously. There just aren't enough people around in a hospital at night to run a scheduled list.
Where are they going to get all these extra staff to enable this to happen? The extra beds, facilities etc. Good idea, but you can't make it work with the current resource and staffing levels.
There's a trust that has asked it's nurses to work an extra day for free. Is that how they're going to do it?
