Can i get a work permit? i just got married to a US immigrant and filed for a petition for immigrant visa?

i am currently in the US. We got married in the US. Can I secure a work permit even if my petition is still just in process? what do i need to do to get one? I'm an occupational therapist. Thanks

If your husband is a citizen you hit the jackpot. If he's a Green Card holder you have to go home and wait 5 to 7 years for the petition to be approved.

If you married green card holder, no not based on the petition. You have about a 5-7 year wait or unitl your spouse becomes a naturalized U.S. citizen.
If your new spouse is not a US citizen, chances are you will have to wait until your spouse naturalizes before you can legalize and get a EAD (employment authorization document). But really you haven't provided enough information for a final recommendation. Consult with an attorney.
You should have filed an application for a work authorization card when you filed the petition for the green card. You can probably still do this. Once you get the card, you will be authorized to work, while your immigration application is pending. You normally have to renew the work card every year. If you are a therapist, you will also need to get a license in the state where you plan to work.
