If a British citizen married an American would that give them US residence?
Answer:
There are 2 options:
If you have an American Citizen fiance, he can apply to bring you over on a fiance visa (K1) ...http://www.usimmigrationsupport.org/visa...
You will have to go to an interview and have a medical etc in the US Embassy in London.
If accepted then you can come to the US on the visa and you have to be married within 90 days. You then apply for change of status to permanent residency. (green card) time to obtain Green card varies.
Alternatively you marry in the UK. Your husband then applies for a K3 visa . Again you need to go for interviews etc
If accepted you will be given the visa (which usually is valid for 2 years) You are free to move to the US. Once you arrive you then apply for change of status (green card).
When applying for Green card you will again go for another interview with your husband, for more questions and show proof that your marriage is real and that he can support you financially for the next so many years.
If you are bringing children with you, apply for K4 visa along side the K3.
There is a lot to read about all this, its not easy and straight forward.
Fiancee visa is quicker then coming over as a married person.
However there are less restrictions on the visa on a K3 then there are on a K1.
The process does take time, and can at times be fraustrating, (waiting for the ok). It also cost money, so be prepared.

You can after either 3 or 5 years after you received your Green Card apply for American Citizenship.
Yes, but it's not simple or quick. You have to stay married and it's a very long process. Several years I think.
No, he would have to marry a United Statesian, any American wont do.
Irish citizen yes British Na
aslong as they are a legal american citizen then yes, but only if you stay married for a time period imposed by immigration.
Are you a male or female? No just kidding. Yes possibly. the marriage has to be proven true.
I think even though you marry you have to apply then for residency and stay married for at least 3 years.
Yes, if you marry a US citizen you can get residency. The process takes time and money. Depending on where you file, the application may take 2 years for the temporary residency and 2 more years ( after obtaining the temporary residency) to get the permanent residency ( 10 years to renew it).
Hope that helps.
It would probably get you a visa to come and live in the U.S. You would probably have to go through the same steps to become a citizen as everyone else, but it may be expeditied because of your spouse already being a citizen...go to the state dept website and see if they have more info.
nope! You have to start the paperwork in your home country BEFORE coming. Marrying a citizen is not an automatic road to citizenship either!
I know that I am saying the opposite of everyone above me but what about all the illegal alien Mexicans that married a citizen. Their marriage has no affect on the residency or status of all these millions of illegals.
Yes, but there's a bunch of paperwork and government hoops to jump through. It can take some time.
