Should immigrants pass a basic english test before being granted citizenship?
Answer:
Yes, without a doubt! You can't have a cohesive nation when you can't understand each other! Not only that, but you need to be able to speak and write adequate English to serve on a jury. It is called respecting ones country. If you don't have that kind of respect then you shouldn't become a citizen, PERIOD!
No - they should pass a bloody hard test.
well really they should be checked if they have a bad record in the past or not who knows they arn't terroists
Yes of course - but what about those immigrants that have been granted asylum already - where do you draw the line?
I think it should be an optional qualification that everyone should be able to complete - not just immigrants.
'Pretty Girl' makes a very valid and far more important point.
Personally I believe that was already done and all part of obtaining citizenship unless you were eldery or could prove that you had some other type of mental disablity that prevented you from learning the language.
Definately YES!!!!!!!!
Yes from the country they live in prior to moving to the uk.And tested as soon as they arrive failure means go home try again later. No exceptions.
They should pass back through the hole in the fence where they came in.
k oh so little knowing person.
there is no law to have to learn english to immigrate here.that is when they have a green card card, legal perm resident. but
when you become a us citzen to apply you and when you are okayed. you take a short verbal test on us govt.... so, you must have some basic english. no big deal.
YES. It is so aggravating to try and do something and the person you're talking to can't understand what you're saying and when they talk you can barely understand what they're saying. They should be able to speak, read, write, and comprehend English. Americans will fail thier own children in school if they can't speak, read, write, and comprehend English. I wouldn't go live in a country and not know the language. If i didnt know by the time i got there, i'd make it a goal to learn immediatly.
such test does exist. the british embassies in different countries take the test before issuing visas. if you don't pass the test you dont get a visa. the situation is different for refugees tho. theres no test for them!
No! This is supposed to be a nation of immigrants, not a nation of homogeneous jingoes.
Why aren't U.S. citizens required to study foreign languages to broaden their understanding of other cultures and foreign tongues? That might help them to better understand the problems of foreigners entering the U.S.
yes but is isn't down to the British government to fund this
Yes they should, and if becoming a citizen they should speak fluently.
Yes they should - or they should be held in 'camps' until they do know it AND other cultural things about our blessed country that are ours by right and birthright...When in Rome Do As The Romans Do!
This is the problem...they come here and know nothing of the language, culture, customs or anything. This makes them splinter into little groups with others like them. They don't integrate because of the language barrier and this makes us resent them and they resent us.
We are breeding a great big box of fireworks for the future and for our kids. WELL DONE BLAIR.
Make sure that the test is easy enough for ALL the natural born citizens to pass. Some immigrants have a better working knowledge of the English language than what our public schools produce.
No!! you forget about all the English speaking people who move to countries where English isnt the spoken language and they dont have to pass a test or even take one!
NO NO NO,
BUT they SHOULD swear and sign an allegiance to OUR ways of life or forfeit the right to live in the UK
If they want to live here they should learn English. I notice the Polish make an effort (here in Bristol) but another country just come over and demand that we learn their language!!
Yep, Somalians!!!!
Yes they should have to learn to speak the language of the country they have a citizenship to. They should also have to PAY for the classes to learn how to speak English..
i think perhaps a lot of english born and bred need to take the test too. a lot of immigrants speak far better english than the 'natives'. having said that... i do think its important. i did some work with a bunch of immigrant women who had been living inthe UK on average 17 years (over 40 years in some cases) and practically none of them spoke english - altho' most had kids with degrees! every single one of teh women however would have desperately liked to been able to speak english - it was so debilitating for them not to, and having to constantly rely on their kids. it was just a matter or how to do it - some of them felt too old to learn, others didnt know where to go. this was around the time blunkett made this same suggestion and certain communities were up in arms (but as per usual it was only the men that made the noise) all the women wanted to learn - its just about getting the resources to them and amking them accessible. the govt is spending millions on language classes no one attends.... oh i could go on endlessly and often do... but in essence i agree that english ability should be mandatory but am suspcious of how it can effectively be achieved.
end of rant.... x
yes. i work in a shop that some immigrants use, they come in with their shopping list wrote on a piece of paper because they cannot speak English but they sure can count as they check their change to the penny before they leave the shop!
yes, anyone who was born here had to take English in school!
Totally! Not just the language but also the history and culture. Especially the culture! If they get the answers right then they have no excuses then for crying persicution because they will know what we are like before we grant them citizenship. If they get them wrong then - bye bye!
YES
Yes, that would make many people happy. lol
yes, absolutely yes
Any immigrant who moves to this country should be compelled to have some knowledge of English and be prepared to learn it as soon as they get here. They should also have a skill that is required here and not be able to claim benefits until they have paid into the system.
yes. immigrants should definitely be able to pass an english test. and not just the basics like cat and dog. but it should be more advanced. they are in america. we shouldnt have to scream and yell in order to get the message across. every american citizen should be able to speak english fluently. and about "mathbiomajor", whats wrong with you?! we live in america! they should do the work to get in. its called respect. i understand that not every government is like the u.s. and that freedom is not handed out to them so freely, but it shouldnt be so hard to take their order or ask them what hurts when their injured. and we do teach foreign classes. its called world history.
Yes.
