Once that is granted, then you need to meet the residency requirements for a specified number of years before you can apply for citizenship. In addition, if you are an American citizen you need to look up the list of countries that the US allows dual citizenship with. If you do not want the American citizenship then you must go before a judge during a court hearing and present a valid reason why you want to renounce your citizenship. If the judge feels that your reason is valid then it will be granted, but you must first have the status of at least residency in another country before you do this because if not you will be considered stateless.
