How can i be a legal resident in the UK when my visa expires this May?

Answer:
Depending on what type of Visa you have and what the purpose of your remaining in the UK is- you may be able to renew and renew again. But on the other hand if your time is up- then your time is up! Settlement Visas allow you to apply for indefinte leave to stay- which is a step or two before becoming naturalized/citizenship etc. If you are a student- you should be able to extend if you promise that you are going to return home after you complete your studies.
If you are on a work permit/visa. Your job will have to reapply for you to continue your work. Of if your job expires- you need to find a new company to sponsor your stay.

It all depends on why you are in the UK and how long you need to stay.
Good luck either way.
Since you know your visa is about to expire you need to put in for a renewal so that you can stay a legal resident.
