Hi, how long can i legally be out of the u.s.? i have a green card,is it 180 days or a year? thanks?

Answer:
You can stay out for a year, but not a day longer. Even if you are away for a shorter time, CBP might have a lot of questions when you return; you will have to convince them that you still are resident in the US.

You need to read this very carefully, especially the section about maintaining permanent residency:

Great question for the INS. If you have reason to be hesitant, talk with an immigration attorney first.
No longer than 9 months. They will confiscate your greencard upon your re-entry into the US if you go past that length of time.
