Are English people inherently racist?

Answer:
I think all people, to some extent, inherently mistrust that which is different. Whether it be race, religion or anything else. Tolerance comes through experience, learning and understanding.

I think that racism and intolerance may appear more common in England (I stress "appear" I'm not saying it is) due to the influence of the British Empire, which tended to foster an unjustified view of superiority of the English over other peoples and cultures, followed by its breakup which lead to a feeling of great resentment among many people in the UK, and in England in particular.

Those feelings of superiority and resentment are still all too common, and make it easier for xenophobia and racism to bubble to the surface in society. So, in my view, rather than being inherent in itself, racism is more a consequence of inherent mistrust of the "other" combined with social conditioning over many years or even centuries.

I stress that I don't think racism is more common in England than in other countries, but I think the factors I just mentioned tend to make it more obvious and bring it into the open more than elsewhere.
I bet you're a foreigner aren't you?
