i am currently living with my south african boyfriend in south africa. he wants to immigrate to canada as soon as possible.i am canadian and we want to get married but we looked into it and the rules state that u cant have a criminal record if u want to immigrate under any circumstance. he just got busted for smoking a joint. it wasnt even anything serious. his country has a **** legal system and he didnt even get a trial. they wont excuse his record for 10 years in south africa. any suggestions?
Answer:
Most countries don't want someone with a criminal background. If you were caught here in Canada with pot, you would receive a criminal charge and most countries won't even let you visit.
Hope this link helps, good luck.

If you have been together over a year take the assessment on the page given to you by Doodles. Any criminal record for entry can be argued by an attorney.
This way you can find out if the rule is really applied as you understand it. Law firms will know of any legal exceptions, options or pending changes.
If you get in remember how much that little joint cost. Maybe he could tell them he didn't inhale. lol Good luck.
