Don't give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses?
I came to the US because of its values... not so that I could own a house, not because I could drive a nice car... but because I have read the constitution cover to cover (I keep a copy of it displayed on my TV showcase so others can see it).
I came here because of what is engraved on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty:
"Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door"
Sad to say the America that existed when I came here 10 years ago is a distant memory
Answer:
US citizens don't mind LEGAL immigration. Its the unstopable flood of illegal immigrants, that are swamping our welfare and health care systems. Our d@mn infrastructure can't cope with it.
BTW- The statue of Liberty is just that. A statue. Not a legal document. First off, it was made by a Frenchman. Don't try to guilt trip us. There are plenty of planes back to India. Why don't you see your way onto one. If not, thats great too. But, remember, you are part of this country. You made a choice to be here. Now, you say this is wrong and this is bad and this needs fixing. Well, do something about it. You worked hard to get here. How could you not feel cheapened by an amnesty program, that benefits only one type of immigrant, one that crosses a river in the dead of night.
Oh, and I remember when I could celebrate Christmas, not Happy Holidays. Easter instead of Spring. Things change, the world loathes us, now. Wants our money, but, also wants us to die. Needs us to go here, help here. Save us here, save them there. Damn Americans, always getting into others business.
Your right by the way. Most Americans probably don't have $10,000 in their bank account. Because we have to pay TAXES. Social security, more taxes to pay for welfare and health care for illegals. And this and that and the other thing. Nice to know that them d@mn politicians can put a $10,000 price tag on citizenship.
There is always a seat on the next plane back..
It exists as strong as ever. You came here legally and we welcome you. Those who show no respect for our soverignty do not deserve the honor of living here. Come legally and we will accept you. GO to most other coutnries and see what hassles you get to get authority to stay let alone be a citizen or own land/property etc.
Didn't you hear that they changed the statement engraved on the Statue of Liberty from "Give me your tired, your poor." to:
"What can brown do for you?"
(just kidding)
It's sad that so many people have broken the law and overburdened our system and forced Americans to turn their back on a founding principal.
Whats your question smart guy??
Edit: Now that i read the second part of your post, i agree.
Yes it is sad. It's about to become more sad.
Could you please point out the area on Lady Liberty that states,
"Please come here, pregnant and all. My taxpaying citizens would love to support your anchor baby while you use the welfare system and your illegal significant other works under the table or steals someones ID to be able to get a job. Please bring your drugs, your gangs and your illiteracy"
Don't recall seeing that.
EDIT TO ADD---
There wasn't a "welfare system" like there is today when that plaque was posted. Those that came before had to pull their own weight or go hungry. They didn't have daddy gubment giving them cheese.
To answer your question, that poem was written in order to raise money to build the pedestal for the Statue of Liberty. I think you're taking it a little too serious.
The wonderful thing is that nobody is keeping you here. If things have changed so much for the worse than you might want to consider picking a better country.
God bless and good luck, I hope this helped.
Nonsense. You come to this country LEGALLY.
Good things happen to those who wait.
The statue of liberty is about a ideal not a invitation for a invasion
As another LEGAL immigrant, I have to say that I have no problem with the USA enforcing it's rights as a sovereign nation, the USA owes people who want to immigrate here nothing, and has no responsibility to accept every single person who would like to move to the USA, I'm happy that my family were permitted to immigrate here, but had we not been, we would not have entered the USA illegally.
The French gave us the statue so they wouldn't have to worry about tired huddled masses themselves. All things evolve including nations, and the wide open unsettle land or the explosion of industry sadly are a thing of the past. I'm glad you found your way to America and are able to live in her great land but as I stated before times change and we cannot absorb every one else's problem without becoming bloated and having no resources for everyone who is already here.
Those "poor and huddled masses" that you speak of are the one's who are destroying this country all out of self service. They come to this giving country in order to take advantage of what it offers.
Sorry to disagree but you said it yourself. Amnesty is forgiveness of a crime. Illegal immigrants are criminals. They have broken at least one law.
What's wrong with you? After going through all that trouble to become a citizen, you think that it's alright for someone else to just come here, sneak in through the back door? You studied the Constitution, you have learned our laws, you speak our language, you pay our taxes, you VALUE our country, YOUR COUNTRY. These people who come here illegally do not share the same beliefs that you do, my friend. If they did, they would go through the same process that you did. You need to re-think your views.
If you want it to read the way things are going with illegals right now it needs to finish reading like this:
".I lift my lamp beside the golden door...so they can come by the millions illegally, without first being processed so we can know who they are and where they are. And so they can drop their loads and get on welfare and start drawing the benefits of being an American citizen without first putting into it. And so they can come here and march our streets DEMANDING from the American government what they won't demand from their own home country."
3 million. That's how many illegal immigrants are in America today. You talk about them wanting a better life. What about a better life for U.S. citizens? What about all the poor and homeless who beg on the streets? What about the jobs that illegals steal because employers can get away with paying them under minimum wage? Jobs that our poor need. Why do they come here? A better life? Coming here to be paid way less than an American citizen and living crowded in an apartment with ten other families is the American dream? Give me a break. Besides, if these illegals want to be American citizens, they will be TREATED like American citizens to the full extent of the law. You should know damn well that no lawbreaker gets away without punishment in America. If you really loved America, you would know this.
Give me life, liberty, and free pizza...
If you are unhappy with The United States of America, you can always go back to India or put a sock in it!
ok.. so i'm all for immigration, but there is only so much our infrastructure can handle. if you sent as many people as would fit..there would be half as much immigration as there is now. do you ever wonder why america has the least amount of mandatory vacation time? or the highest amount of sick days called in?? The people who are legally allowed to work here are being forced to provide services for those who arent...i'm tired, broke and feel like another peg in a hole too...and i was born here...
What i'm saying is that we do our best, and yes i do welcome immigration, but it is hard for our country to keep up with it as it is..and i think people are becoming more understanding of having 'outsiders' around.
there is a joke by carlos mencia..something about how the arabs are like the new mexicans...the idea is that basically any new group of people who come to a country are shat upon, because people dont really understand what they're going through, and there are so many cultural differences that it makes things even more frustrating..
anyways..hope you have a nice day..
I'm also a legal Mexican immigrant. We should let everyone in this country that wants to come, and then watch it fall apart, right? You're very wrong.
"Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door" Yep were they are free to live in their own seperate sections.
When Illegal/legal immigration has an adverse affect on American citizens (like it is) It needs to be stopped or slowed down. When those who come here drive down wages and use government assistance is when we as Americans need to say enough! and in no way should an immigrant (legal/illegal) be given preference over American born citizen. (tax breaks, scholarships, etc.) I'm for legal immigration but at lower level than what is being allowed. And yes it should be tough to become a citizen.
Legal = good
Illegal = bad
Who cares about a stupid statue or what is written on it.
Is it law? NOoooooooooooooooooooo!!!!...
Then who cares...
I've seen this type of Statue of Liberty question before. The statue does not say 'bring me your law breaking illegals'.
The problem now is that the taxpayers have become the tired, poor and huddled masses... Overburdening the taxpayers was not the idea behind the gift from France. It is also not a wise way to run a country.
I do feel bad for these people. But that does not excuse breaking the law. I would like a better life for myself and my son as well. But it's damn near impossible to get ahead when every time you turn around taxes are being raised, costs are rising for gas, food, and healthcare because someone has to make up the difference for all of the free services these people are getting.
You want to tell me when I get a chance for a better life? I'm so busy working and paying taxes to make life better for a group of people that don't do it legally, that I don't have a chance myself. Should I go out and rob a bank or something? I mean if it's in the interest of providing a better life for my child doesn't it make it alright?
You feel special? I shall wrap you a cookie and send it to you, as your read the U.S. constitutution. People migrate for various reasons, yours is valid, and for those that migrated illegally, their reasoning is equally valid.
Ya really had me with the values and owning a house etc.
You lost me with the Irish and Germans etc. They didn't have public assistance back then. It was sink or swim. No free English classes and no real public school system. They worked children ...many Irish white children like dogs in factories and were treated worse than many slaves. Some got off the boat and went straight to war. Now after working through all that you think I'm gonna take generations of hard work and sacrifice and hand it over to law breakers who have no respect for our laws? Sorry..ain't gonna happen.
It says those yearning to be free. Not give us the worlds poor and we'll financially support them for free, give up our jobs, our language and stop enforcing our laws because it's too tough for them to deal with. They can fly foreign flags and while they're working, degrade the very people who are making their "better life" possible.
I can without a doubt say the US is NOTHING like it used to be and I've been around here alot longer than 10 years. I've embraced legal immigrants and have been thrilled with their contribution to our country. I've seen real pride in their eyes and an attitude of greatfullness that looks NOTHING like the faces I've seen screaming and demanding in our streets. People that went through far more than a trip across the border. People who landed here and the FIRST thing they did was learn English and become good honest law abiding citizens who wouldn't dream of bankrupting our social programs or dropping out of school with an arrogant attitude of entitlement.
I agree our process for legalization needs improvement but it doesn't give anyone the right to disrespect our laws. Hey.if it's so much easier someplace else.cheaper somewhere else.they have the whole world to choose from. No one made them come here. I can't go and demand easy, cheap, citizenship with no red tape in any country. Not to mention if I was that desperate....I sure wouldn't act like they have.
I've checked on immigration for myself. They don't need my skills and I'm not in the proper age bracket. Trust me.all the screaming and name calling and crying about my human rights and how they HAVE to take me coz I WANT it....isn't going to get me a welcome mat and citizenship. They have laws and standards and limits just like we do. Difference is..I respect that..I don't think any country would want people who don't.
The US is liberal with their immigration policies but we aren't an endless open pocket-book for people who just want to use the country for money and abuse the PRIVILEGE of being here.
As far as I'm concerned maybe they should make it harder so we weren't filled with a bunch of ingrates expecting a free ride to the top immediately and nothing they don't like in their way.
There were way too many serious loopholes in that immigration bill. Far more than just a blanket ok ya all can stay. Being since the "powers that be" say our last amnesty was unenforceable..this one was a sheer joke considering the massive amounts of people and the obvious shortfalls of everything. It's a broken system but excuse me if I don't agree with the idea that a bad bill is better than no bill. I've heard one too many times about "loopholes" and seen 1 too many things slip through that had far reaching serious consequences, that nothing half-assed is acceptable anymore.
This country is going through some serious changes and excuse me if there's those of us who don't want to see it go totally down the tubes by this elite group of idiots.
They keep wanting to push through these things before people even read them. That desperate lets me know there's serious things to be on the lookout for. They had very damaging things in that bill that went far beyond just giving people citizenship for a fee. If you take note many times they put these little riders in that have nothing to do with the bill at hand in hopes of sliding things through concerning something else. Wake-up. I know I've blindly trusted them to do what's right and didn't pay attention to all that was going on. It's been a rude awakening and years of mis-placed trust coz I just beleived them without question. Not anymore.
The Statue of Liberty implies a desire for immigration, but that doesn't necessarily mean a desire for ILLEGAL immigration.
Furthermore, the statue says to give us people "yearning to breathe free." Not yearning to sponge off welfare and get free emergency medical care and schooling for their kids without contributing much.
