Should non-English speakers be allowed into the country (UK)?

Are you not fed up of meeting people who can speak only a few words of English? How on Earth are these people supposed to benefit our society or economy in any way, beyond making it more secular, with different ethnic-background communities sticking together? Or do you thinkg language does not matter?
Should all immigrants have to take an English test, to make sure they can speak, write, and read english to an appropriate degree?

Answer:
It should be compulsory for newcomers to learn Enlish before they can work in the country or obtain benefits. That should include wives as well. When they falsely sign a tax or benefit declaration they can't say they didn't understand the language.
No, because you setup the risk for creating a subculture within your borders that is non-UK. Would you rent a room in your house to someone who doesn't speak english or puts a lock on their door to keep you out?
they should take a test before they get outside to see if its up to scratch
If you think about it, immigrants usually take the jobs that locals don't want to do. I've seen a lot more immigrants with jobs rather than locals, so they do contribute to the economy.

i do however, agree with this: Should all immigrants have to take an English test, to make sure they can speak, write, and read english to an appropriate degree.

Only because, speaking understandable english helps ward off racist pricks.
Absolutely no way and what really pisses me off is when foreigners work in shops and you can't understand a flipping word.
First of all, I believe anyone should be allowed to live where they like.

But lack of knowledge of the society and its language can often inhibit their functioning, especially if they are in the minority.

If they can function however, without the knowledge of the society, its not necessary for them to know much about the society. People are just disgruntled by change, and feel they have more rights than others.

Implementing such an edict shouldnt be based upon fears, tradition and preserving the country, rather in, as I say, their practical functioning in the society.

LONG STORY SHORT - Non english speakers should learn english and its culture only if not doing so will inhibit their functioning and contribution to the society.
of cousre they should! maybe not to live or be asked to take english lessons. a lot of britons move to foriegn countries to you know where they can hardly speak their language. you just need to give people a chance. yes i agree it annoying but i think there should be a solution. that they are made to take english lessons. i'm british by the way
Look at how Switzerland works... only lets skilled workers in and they are now leading europe. That used to be the UK and Germany before the EU started growing and mass immigration from UK colonies started in th 60s.
Anyone that is prepared to work and pay taxes is welcome as far as I'm concerned. I think it should be the individuals choice to learn English, but if we take away free translators from all the social services offered then there would be a genuine motivation to learn the language. If I move to Spain or France I do not get a free translator in hospital.
no , were over croweded and we dont want them
when i holiday abroad i learn the basic greetings etc; in the language of the country. i promptly forget it when i leave!
i have no doubt that if i lived there - i would pick up a great deal more conversational communication, which would encourage me to learn more.
give immigrants a chance. they are also at a disadvantage until they learn english - and can be exploited.
i would hate the world to close doors so that the english stayed in england, the italians stayed in italy etc; etc...
How many UK folks, who have gone to live in Spain, are fluent in Spanish?

What if it is made to work both ways?
no they shouldnt, if they dont like it....tough titties!
Yes, and then deport all British expats from Spain, France and anywhere around the world, who are proud of not speaking the native's language at all.
no they shouldnt unless its for a holiday, but I learn foreign languages when I go to another country out of courtesy more than anything
no because theres too many of them now.
In my life i have met a lot of Brits, and no one of them spoke any different language!
A lot of Brits goes to Spain, and I'm 100 percent sure that 99% percent dont speak spanish, isn't it?
Before you ask a question think twice! Pal
I maybe the only one..but I totally agree with every word you have said.

Yes, I am very fed up especially as these people are doing jobs I am more qualified to do and yes I speak and write fluent English. I was born here.
I believe you are completely confusing the issue here. You refer to 'secular, ethnic backgrounds' and then you ask about whether language matters or not.

I think what you are trying to refer to is cultures or individuals that will not or do not assimilate and this can be an issue, everyone has a choice.

Having been fortunate to have lived and worked in various countries around the world I found it fascinating and challenging to be accepted into foreign working cultures. If you have never experienced being excluded from a forum, gathering or the like because you are different it can be very unsettling and upsetting. And before you jump to any conclusions I am British, caucasian and speak English fluently. On occassions that put me at a disadvantage but in these situations you learn to assimilate, its the mature thing to do.

My point here is that it does not matter where you are or what you do, you will be judged in seconds by your appearance. And if people think because you are caucasian and speak English you will satisfy all criteria and be automatically accepted how very wrong they are.

I agree with you about being able to have a functional use of English, this is of great benefit to the UK and the immigrant, its the natural thing to do. So is being able to speak Manderin in China, Hindi in India and Japanese in Japan. It works all ways. The world is ever changing, its full of opportunties for those who want it and are given a chance. Do not completely judge a book by its cover all the time!
Take away all free translation services - the money saved can then be used to improve health services, civic services and ecucation. With limited budgets hard choices have to be made and caps put on unnecessary spending. Translating services should the province of the volunteer.
How many languages do you speak or have you never been outside the UK
Theres loads of brits settled in Spain but they dont speak spanish! I rest my case..
