I was born in the USA I have an american passport.both my parents were born in Iran...and according to them I have an Iranian birth cirtificate (even though I was born in USA with an american birth certificate)...according to what I know of Iranian law, being the child or spouse of an Iranian citizen makes you an Iranian citizen.I am going to join the Navy so I am gonna need to jettison my other citizenship.anyone know how to renounce dual citizenship?

Answer:
Oh, dear! You may go crazy when you hear this but unfortunately it's true. According to Iranian constitution, in order to renounce your Iranian citizenship you have to be at least 25 and have served in the Iranian military for 2 years and get your service certificate. Then you have to get a lawyer and fill out some forms for asking your Supreme Leader's permission. Although it is said that it's hard to get most often, plus you'll automatically lose your US citizenship because you've served in some other countries army.
This is for renouncing it. But still you can talk to Iranian intersection at Pakistan embassy in Washington to see what else you can do.
I would imagine a judge(preferably a Federal judge) would be able to do it. Although, being the US, you will no doubt have to file a form or 2 and hire a lawyer. Good luck in the Navy.
You can probably do it by going to Iranian embassy and renouncing your citizenship to the councelor there? or Checking with them might be a good start :)
VERY CAREFULLY (from what i've heard)
No you won't if in fact you have dual citizenship.
I doubt you have Iranian citizenship unless your parent applied for it. In most countries it has to be applied for. If you're concerned about it though, you could talk to INS about how to renounce any foreign citizenships you may have.
You have to do this;
Say "I break with thee, I break with thee, I break with thee!" and then you throw the dog poopy on their shoes.

Kidding.
Contact the US Sate Department. They can help you with that. Or your Navy recruiter should be able to get the forms and fill them out and submit them.
Unfortunately John seems to be right. After running around tapping information into search engines I could find virtually no information regarding renouncing Iranian citizenship (strangely enough they've got some of the most lax rules on becoming a citizen via descent that I've ever seen).

US and Iran have something in common. They allow dual citizenship but they do not recognise it. According to the USA you are American (same with the Iranian).

I found a couple of links which I've posted and pasted some info that you might find interesting.

BTW Did you post the same question on mytend? I found a similar question to yours posted there. http://www.mytend.com/immigration/167-1-...

Sorry. I know this isn't exactly what you want to hear.

---Article 988
Iranian nationals cannot abandon their nationality except on the following conditions:
(1)That they have reached the full age of 25.
(2)That the Council of Ministers has allowed their renunciation of their Iranian nationality.
(3)That they have previously undertaken to transfer, by some means or other, to Iranian nationals, within one year from the date of the renunciation of their Iranian nationality, all the rights that they possess on landed properties in Iran or which they may acquire by inheritance although Iranian laws may have allowed the possession of the same properties in the case of foreign nationals. The wife and children of the person who renounces his nationality according to this Article do not lose their Iranian nationality, whether the children are minors or of age, unless the permission of the Council of Ministers allows them to renounce their nationality; and
(4)That they have completed their national military service.---

Try contacting the navy and seeing if they can help you out with details.
