As you've adequately put, in order for your friend to visit you here in the U.S you HAVE to send it to him w/ proof, or he also has the option to show a huge amount of money in his bank acount. Sending your inv. will only help him speed up the process but it is not going to affect the overall plan. Your friend has to show some real proof as to why he intends to go to the US. Basically, if the embassy gives him the pink visa sheet they will let him go if he gets the white one... then he won't be able to!!!
He doesn't need to prove that he has a good reason to come. On the contrary, he has to prove he has a good reason to go back to his home country when his visa expires.
