This is the problem when our government takes over our charitable giving. If we were all free to choose where to donate our money, you'd see less welfare slums and more people actually living the American dream.
We Americans are very generous, but we expect people to help themselves as much as possible. I'll give you a hand up, but not a handout. I am so sick and tired of people who feel that they are owed something simply because they are still breathing.

The beauty of being in America is your freedom to choose to be selfish or giving.
If people want to help others in other countries, that is their choice. I mean, someone has to. I am biased though since my father works for Foreign AID which is to help other countries in need. They do a lot of good work. There are also organizations that help our own people. You should do some research on it, in case you missed it.
And, providing AID to countries, such as Kosovo, you have more power to create allies and more democratic nations.
It's a thankless job, but this "international pariah" is expected to do the world's dirty work such as sending foreign aid.

I completely feel the same way. We have problems in our country too that need to be addressed. Let's solve our own problems before we start butting our noses in others. It is not just you and I think people need to start being aware of it too.
I am very impressed when someone, celebrity or philanthropist, does something for people in need in the US. I think people like Madonna and Angelina Jolie do all of that overseas because they feel that it gives them status among their peers, or makes them seem like they are morally superior. There are some professional athletes very involved in reading projects and health care projects in needy areas in the US. Can you name a movie star who is out there doing anything for the US, other than making millions off us?

I get in trouble every time i answer questions like this...but here it is i live in south Tx near border nuthin like gettin woke up by illegals walking in your back yard theres so much dope around here it aint funny. I keep praying that Pres will veto NAFTA and totally close border to Mexico and built the big fence heck we could use illegal immigrants for slave labor that would keep their a s s s on their side alone. Now they wanting to allow Iraqies in my god them people are terrorists. Also if we vetoed NAFTA a whole bunch of american companies would have to come back to US and would give a bunch of jobs back to american workers

I personally have no problem with Americans generosity abroad as long as it is genuinely helping and not buying Solid Gold Heated Toilet Seats for a Dictators Toilet.
We just can't help every country in the world. Or we'll end up in their shoes.....and NOBODY will help us. And be hated too.
I agree with you whole heartily. This could be a better Country. If people would stop using the "this is a free country" to do whatever I choose attitude. It's a free Country but be American about it.
Has anyone ever heard of the U.S. Agency for International Development? This federal agency has spent billions annually for over 40 years to help what used to be called the "less-developed countries." Ever since World War II, there have been well-funded federal agencies working to improve economic and social conditions abroad. Not to mention all the private philanthropic groups with similar projects.
People in other countries must reform their countries themselves. No one else can do it for them.
one third of americans live below poverty line.yes there lots of help but its not helping you cant get out,even with a good job.thats what people get mad about and dont understand.ok say a person get food stamps of $200.00 mo.,get subdized housing of $200.00 a mo.you have medicad with co pay,you get a job $7.00 hr,you have children,need sitter of $65.00 per child.already you cant pay for sitter,then next happens cut food to one half,cut housing by half.What you have left to live on?you have less than you started with.System needs changing,its keeps people down and dirt poor so why work?i know several families this has happened to.its not a myth its a fact.so while you are hating all those poor people they would love to find a way out.they are not all degrenates.

We are helping everyone but ourselves and i may sound awful but those people in the middle east can wait to get help with expensive things like repairing electricity to an entire city. Not only are we trillions of dollars in debt, we need renovations of our own in the motherland
Ya know I wonder the same thing, but I went to Iraq and saw how childern live over there. They beg for water. No one should have to beg for water. I couldn't help but to give them water or some food if I had any exrta. There are 3 things in the world worth caring about: Love Life and Liberty.
It's not just you.This country needs to stop minding every other country's business and getting into never-ending wars.It breaks my heart every time I see a homeless family in my area (mind you it's freezing outside) or an elderly person who cannot afford their medication.We are one of the richest nations in the world and we are unable to solve these problems,I just don't understand it.People adopt foreign babies because the laws are more lenient overseas than here.I knew a lady who was a big time alcoholic and ended up adopting a boy from Guatemala because she did not qualify here.Refugees are usually victims of those sick"ethnic cleansing" campaigns,so I actually do feel bad for them.I remember my Southeast Asian friends who came from camps in Thailand.They were given only one bowl of rice a day to eat,now that is sad.

It is good that we care about the rest of the world, but we should not just ACT like we care about the rest of the world. We should have true compassion for all living things. Moreover, we should be the most compassionate for those whom we recognize as most deserving of our charity.
It is disgusting that the United States government can't provide food, shelter, and minimal health care for every individual in the nation; no matter what citizenship, age, background, etc. We should be able to more closely meet this ideal goal, especially considering the huge amount of money that goes into international charities. Why do the rich use so many tax loopholes and manipulate our puppet government to deny us these basic necessities, then donate to charities helping "the less fortunate" across the globe for the sole purpose of making themselves look good and feel better?
Secondly, do people even realize what they're doing by contributing to all of these charities? It is an empirical fact that poor people reproduce more. If a poor family receives charity, then that family has a higher rate of survival than they otherwise would have. While this is a GOOD thing, it is also a double edged blade. Human growth has been slowly reaching finite limits to consumption; we are driving more and more species and wildlife extinct to maintain our current population. We are consuming more than the Earth can create. In this case, if you donate to a charity, make it the MOST deserving charity you can find. It is your DUTY to only try to help those whom you consider deserving of your help. If you donate to a particular charity simply to "jump on the bandwagon," then you are not acting morally.
If we don't let some people die, then soon noone will be able to live. Sorry to break it to you.
