I heard u cant claim for a british passport once u over a certain age?

my father moved to south africa from england when he was 18 in 1959 , and has never had a chance to return, regardless this makes me the first person in my family never to have set foot on british soil , which i plan on doing someday soon, my question is "I heard rumour that i wouldn't be able to claim for a british passport once im over a certain age? is this true, ill be 24 on in a month.

if someone could shed some light on this, id appreciate it .
