The UK is an island...and asylum seekers have to seek asylum in the first safe country...?

...so shouldn't we only accept asylum applications from people that have either come on a direct plane, or direct ship, or have swam here?

Answer:
But that's exactly what happens, at least in theory. Anyone claiming asylum who is known to have passed through a "safe" country, ie one where they could have claimed asylum, is sent back there without further consideration of their claims.

A problem arises when people arrive in the back of a lorry, claiming that they have know idea which countries they passed through, because they were kept hidden under the control of people smugglers. Well, we all know that some of them have been camped at Calais waiting for their chance, and so should be sent back there, but on the other hand some genuiniely have been in the control of thuggish gangs on their passage across Europe, without opportunity to claim en route; and without reasonable proof, other transit countries won't accept them back.

Contrary to common belief, Britain does not receive more asylum-seekers than other countries. France received more claims than the UK each year since 2003; across the same period, Holland, Belgium, Austria, and Sweden, among others, received far more than us relative to their populations.
Thats where they come from.
Yeah but these countries send them on to here, and anyway the UK is where they are heading anyway, deport the feckin lot of em.
How would you prove where they came from last?
That's the way it should be, but the French just send them all to Britain, because they know that New Labour are in charge of immigration.
I quite agree with you unfortunately Europe doesn't and lets
not forget our European neighbours have much more stringent Immigration Laws, so they will happily play pass the parcel and lets not forget we are the Welfare Kingdom of the World with free board and lodgings plus you get paid into the Bargain. Its no longer a question of being safe, words out the Soup Kitchen's Open and its Free!!!
The short answers is yes.

The long answer is if you make a rule you have to make it possible to enforce, and you have to facilitate it's upkeep.

But it is not all doom and gloom. Think of the many kicked out by Idi Amin, who took over the corner shop up and down the country at a time when most were loosing out to Supermarkets. There is a good chance your local Chinese Takeaway is run by one of the Boat People from Vietnam.

Rather than worry about immigrants probably we should be more concerned about indigenous population with low aspirations and high expectations.

I am aware that there are those who have worked hard all there lives and made an honest contribution to the community and feel overwhelmed and that they are being kicked in the teeth, particularly in terms of housing, pensions, and social care. It is right that these people should not be ignored just because they are naturally stoic.
The simple answer is they only want to come here, they get everything free health, education, housing, benefits and given money to boot, lets face it of you were living in a country that gave you nothing no work, health care, food, education, then I'm sure you too would be heading here. Its very Noble of the UK to be so generous, but they seem to have forgotten about their own people, who have paid their tax's and national insurance, and contributed to our society, so much so that when it comes to us needing help, there's none. "your not entitled to anything. I guess the answer is to put a stop to asylum and illegal immigration until we've sorted our own house out, and send back anyone who tries to get in and if we don't know what country they came from, then just send them to the nearest country of origin.
CORRECT, We are soft touch rip off UK and we should end that nonsense now
youd think it were that simple but they all rush to get here because they get money and houses for nothing
Thankfully there are people like jimquk who can give an informed balanced view instead of a tabloid style knee jerk "send the buggers back" like most of the answers here.
don't forget you can travel now right from a far eastern Europe country through to the Channel without any boarder control
They stopped taking notice of that rule because they thought it would be unfair on spain and it would relly wouldn't it they would get everyone. Alex
Surely if they have come from an already 'safe' country, they should no longer be classed as asylum seekers.
