They come here for U.S. dollars. I've a friend who is American and lives in Mexico (she's a teacher). She said that most children only go to school through 7th grade. Quite a few quit after that to help their family make what small amount of money they can there.
The reason Mexicans come here to the U.S. is because it's difficult to make a good living in Mexico. Not to mention the fact that stuff is expensive over there. A lollypop will cost 5 pecos, which is about 50 cents over here.
Usually the husband, brother, or male of the family will go out in search of work. They come here, make money, and send it back to their family.
She said most can barely afford food to feed their family. Most wash their clothes the old way, in a cement basin. My friends in the Yucatán by the way, which is far different than being in Mexico City. Her next door neighbor's children had never had a Christmas present, probably never a Birthday present either. The little boy's backpack had been sewn up so much there wasn't much more it could be sewn. They have no lockers there in the schools, no holders in the desks, so books are carried to each class in a backpack. Needless to say that wears out the backpacks quickly.
It's basic survival is what it really boils down to. You go where the best work is.

I'm VERY proud of being Mexican and VERY proud of my Mexican people, and NOT EVERY Mexican wants to come live here so stop generalizing. Mexicans aren't the only people coming in the United States. The reason why many want to live here (if you do mean the U.S.) is because of the opportunities given here, it has nothing to do with what people live here, don't get too conceided.

To those who say that the US "stole" mexico's land, you should really re-check your facts. It's not stealing if there was a war, and the winning side declared dominion over the conquered people and land. DUH. As for mexico, the US has never owned, nor does it WANT to own, that slum.
