I totally agree with you. I am black and I do not think that African-American is an appropiate term. It's too long for one and it does not make sense because a South African white person that moves to the states can be considered an African-American. Blacks are so far removed from Africa at this point.
Since science claims we all came out of Africa, nice theory, never proven, I say I am African American and demand my reparations check.

Technically, your definition is correct. I guess for lack of a better name, people have been using "African American".

Live and let live, dude. Language is important and how you refer to something makes a big difference. If someone wants to be called an African American, why is it such a big deal to call them that?

some years back it was appropriate to call someone of Asian decent (regardless of where in Asia) "Oriental". Remember? That term has now been replaced with the more general term of Asian.
Right now, African American is the appropriate term. Maybe that will change to just African later, who knows
