I want to marry a hungarian girl?

She wants us to marry in Hungary and in the hungarian legal office they said that they need a written permission from the US that I can marry a hungarian citizen and they also need something called an apostil. In the legal office here they don't know what kind of papers are these exactly. Can anybody give me some info on this?

Answer:
What the Hungarian office needs is proof that you are free to marry. It would be the equivalent of a marriage license that we get here before we can marry. They might also want your birth certificate, translated into Hungarian.

Another piece of advice I can give you is don't wait for anything. Follow up everything, ask when someone will get back to you, when the certain someone in charge of your files is available, etc. Hungarians tend to leave things on the burner til eternity if you don't stay on it. Also, you think they told you all they need but they'll come up with something else at the moment where you've run out of time. Like, you could be in Hungary with all the asked for and then they ask for your birth certificate, etc. It can be done but you have to be extremely diligent with these people.

Good luck with it all. Hungarians are incredibly bureaucratic. I have been waiting for my Hungarian citizenship for almost 3 years now. (I'm first generation American Hungarian.) I've learned to be patient.

We finally gave up on getting legally married in Hungary and got that done here in the U.S. a month ago. We leave in 8 days to do the church wedding in Kecskemet :)

Make sure you give yourself PLENTY of time to get all the papers together. Also, know that the papers that you are asked to provide have a time limit on them. In our case, they told us that we had to submit the papers within 6 months of the date we wanted to marry but no sooner. Had I not been persistent in getting details on WHEN to submit, etc, I may not have gotten it out of them that we cannot submit the papers too early. Not knowing this stuff and not knowing the right questions to ask will cause you great grief.

It took 3 months for the Hungarian church to finally accept the church papers that were prepared here upon the instructions of the Hungarian priest. Somehow, the office wasn't in agreement with the priest's instructions and we couldn't even secure the date, the church, nothing. We got it together just in the nick of time. Our hungarian guests have just NOW received their invitations and the wedding is Mar 3. We sent them all a letter letting them know we were working on it and hoped for Mar 3, etc.

I cannot stress enough the importance of extreme diligence and proactiveness and patience with these people. And always be nice. Make sure you get the info from a good source. Things can get lost in translation.

Good luck with your Hungarian Princess!
Apostil is a certificate that you are not Gay. This is a special exam and then yu have to swear on bible.
ha ha ,before you chose 2 go through the trouble of gettin the US's consent make sue she an't a guy!
Contact the US Embassy in Hungary. They'll be able to help you.

An apostille is just a fancy term for being notarized in such a way that's it's internationally recognized. There's actually international law on this.
Hungary is a beautiful country! Goood luck there!
You can do what I did and save yourself some trouble by doing the marriage paperwork in the US. We got married in Vegas (no paperwork hassle) and then brought the marriage certificate to Hungary to be recognized. Can't remember exactly what was involved, but I'm sure it was easier bureaucracy-wise. We plan on having the real wedding ceremony next summer in Hungary in a church and stuff.

Good luck! Hungarian women rule. Or at least they got great bodies.
