depends which country you are in, and how old you are. In Australia an adult passport is valid for 10 years, while a minor is valid for 5 years, or if they turn 18 (when they need to apply for an adult passport).
I haven't gotten one recently, but that last I knew in the U.S. a passport is good for 10 years.
