Do I need SSN?

I'm married and got my greencard last year. I don't plan to work in the US. Do I need to apply for SSN? Is it mandatory?

Answer:
If you are planning on living in the US permanently you do.
Well, I don't think is mandatory but why not having one? after all most things you do these days will require you for one... if you apply for a credit card, cellphone, utility bill, etc...
not any more....America is wide open to everyone...

God help us
Yes, it is mandatory if you are a US citizen. You even need a temporary one if you are not a US citizen and doing banking transactions within the US. It will become mandatory if you ever give birth - the hospitals will refuse to accept you without one. All insurance policies will also reject you if you do not have one. You cannot board a plane without one if you do not drive. You cannot get a driver's license without one.
Yes. When you and your spouse file a return (even though you don't work) it is needed. Since you are married you MUST file either married filing joint o married filing single
Then you'll at some time need to get your social security number. Even though you don't PLAN(per say) on working here, if something were to happen to your husband (god forbid) you could be eligble for survivorship benefits, as well as your child(if and/or when you might have one). Hope that helps you some.
Yes, if you plan to live and work in the USA.
You will want one sooner or later. You need it for much more than work. You will want to establish credit, I imagine, maybe buy a house some day?

That is why identity theft is such a big deal. If other people are using a person's number, the person who owns the number typically can't get approved for car loans, house loans, etc.
