go to the American Embassy and apply for a visa/work permit
but be prepared for a lot of paperwork

For an Irish citizen the process for a first visa is very quick as you have one of the largest work visa quotas in Europe. If you can't make it to Dublin or London to the US Embassy, I think they can still process an application at either Shannon or Cork airport.

it can take from 1-3 years depending on the job you are applying for, if you want is a work visa, you need to demonstrate that somebody in america is looking for a person to perform a job that no american can do. Find a sponsoring company that wants to hire you and pay your immigration fees and you will be in your way!

If you are from Northern Ireland you can try the diversity lottery, but I believe that opens in October. The H1B visas will start taking applications for October 2007 in April, I believe, and they ran out last year in May, I think, so you'd want to be ready with your sponsor.

If it was possible for anyone to just say i wanna go work for 6 months in the U.S. .. and I'll return, we would not have the illegal immigration problem we have. Now if you get sponsored by a U.S. company or and international company that has offices in the U.S. that's a different story.
