Is it possible?

To gain legal status after crossing over illegally. I have read a few answers stating yeah they were illegal but now they have a green card or oh they were undocumented but now they are legal is that possible? I've always been told that once they know you crossed over illegally your claim is denied. What is the truth?

Answer:
i have herd the same thing. i guess it's all in how well the illegals suck.
It is possible, but it is rather difficult and time consuming.
Yes it's possible.
It is possible. Once in several years or so, US govt grants green cards to anyone who can prove he/she has been residing in the US (legally or illegally, no matter which) for 7 or 10 years. May not sound right, but US govt does it.
Yes, it's very possible. It makes it look worse for you, but it doesn't make it impossible to get legal.
I asked for a Green card and look what they done to me.
Unfortunately it is very much possible...

I work for USCIS at their National Customer Service Center. Illegals call in on a daily basis wondering how they can become legal. It is really a matter of the Embassy, Department of State, and Customs and Border. USCIS doesnt have much to do with that... Oh, and dont forget ICE as well. Anyways, generally, they can pay a 1000 or more fine for their "wrong doings" and file a I-601 to waive the requirements to live in the United States if they have a good enough story... Such as they fled for fear of persecution, abuse, etc etc etc. The whole process will be very long and tiresome, but eventually you can actually become a legal permanent resident and maybe even climb to the top of the ladder of that of a US Citizen.

Lets not forget the acts that have been appropriated for illegal aliens as well... Such as for cuban residents, etc.

Long story short, if you have a good reason and they believe you, theyll let you back in... If you dont pay the fine, generally they punish you by making you stay out of the country for ten years and THEN let you in.
