Should US immigration law be changed to make it easier to LEAVE the country?

Presently, people leaving the US and becoming citizens of other countries face a tax of their "estate" - their assets - when they leave, and may even be subject to income tax for a period of time after they emigrate.

I know of not similar restrictions on those bringing money or assets into the country.

So, should "open borders" work both ways? Why or why not?

What would happen if there were a "one time amnesty" for BOTH those coming in, and going out?

Should future enforcement of one be tied to furure enforcement of the other? If one is enforced more strictly, why?

I guess this also is a question about how people feel about the estate tax in general.

Answer:
Estate taxes are necessary because there is so much of the person's assets that come into focus after that person's demise - tax deferral schemes, tax advantaged investments etc.. - that it makes sense to 'settle the accounts' with uncle sam from the grave. Every one must pay their share alive or dead.

But your idea of making it easy to leave the country is something that the govt. actually pondered for quite sometime. They are not openly talking about it, but yes it was discussed in hushed tones.

If estate taxes exist, why not emigrant tax?

So, stay tuned. You may hear something like that in the immediate future. Face it, compared to many countries, we have very equitable tax laws. (hmmmmm.within reason)
