America/India Citizenship?
We know that Indian passport and a birth certificate can be obtained from one of the Indian embassies in the USA. However, we don't know if America has any objection for this? Do they require the person (even the new born kids) to obtain and travel on American passport? Is this Mandatory?
This is the question from some of the Indian parents who DO NOT want to get American citizenship for their kids. They are here for a short time only and do not intend to get American citizenship or passport. Many countries in the world allow this. But, we have heard that America requires people to enter and exit USA using US passport only. Thus forcing the parents to go for American Citizenship. Is this true?
Any comments on this will be highly appreciated. Is there an official source whom we can contact to get this clarified?
Answer:
America disfavors dual citizenship but doesn't prohibit it. Your child can travel on any passport to which your child is entitled.
You want the immigration web page, or department of state, travel documents. However, dual citizenship is just what it sounds like. I am not entirely sure you can 'renounce' citizenship in the US on your child's behalf. They may have to wait and do that when they are 18.
US does not have any objection. Indian recently introduced, with an huge Indian population in US in mind, the "Overseas Citizen of India" provision for foreign nationals of Indian origin. This is equivalent to Indian citizenship, except for voting rights.
