What are the downsides to having a monarchy?

uk monarchy

Answer:
The huge drain on public money!
they get paid by our taxes
Boring postage stamps...................?
the hangers on.. and the tax we have to pay !
Maybe having the family supported by tax payers? I think some people do not think the Royal family is worth the expenditure, and I assume William or his heir will probably dissolve it.
As a Canadian, I wish the Queen would flake off. I want Canada to be a republic.
They cost us a fortune and all
we get is priveledged idiots
taken out of taxez
Over the years, a lot of countries around the world basically decided that the whole king business pretty much sucks. Freedom, free speech, having a voice, turns out to be better, and stuff, because many heads working together can devise better answers than just one person in charge etc.

Also, in places where there's no kings, you don't have to go watch their parades etc. If you want to kind of be like a king, and have lots of people kiss up to you to curry favor, accumulate lots of money. Do that, and there'll be people lined up around the block to 'kiss the ring' etc.
We have to put up with pictures of ugly people in every newspaper.
Boring questions like this

I don't mind paying my 67p per year in tax to keep them - better value than the Government!
tax and priviledged prats that abuse our hospitality
What upsides are there?-they are just a massive drain of public money.
there is no downsides of having a monarchy. the monarchy are a symbol of english history and pride.
They cost too much money for any services they provide to the British people.
A true monarchy such as a king or queen who rules a country is never good because you can never trust that a person with that much power will always have the best interest of the people in mind all the time. Most people who have received that much power have just let it go to their heads. Never good!

For a monarchy like the current British royal family, what do they really do for the country other than provide loads of entertainment through their shenanigans?
absolutism, too much power corrupts, and the fact that someone is a relative of another leader,, doesn't make him a good leader,,,cough,,, gw
They get lots of news coverage when nobody really cares.
if you didn't have a Monarchy you would need a President, or some other powerful person who would be head of state and able to keep the Prime Minister in check.

As they would have ceremonial duties representing your country you would need to pay taxes anyway to make them look reasonably dignified and smart.

At least the British taxpayer doesn't have to pay for costs of Presidential elections every four years, or see money wasted keeping certain voters on side.
Funny looking inbred people.
NONE.

ANYONE WHO CLAIMS THEY ARE MORE EXPENSIVE THAN THE MONEY THEY GENERATE NOT INCLUDING CHARITABLE WORK IS COMPLETELY WRONG.

IT IS PART OF OUR HERITAGE AND IF PEOPLE DISLIKE THEIR CLASS SITAUATION THEY CAN EDUCATE THEMSELVES TO HIGHER POSITION. MY GRANDPARENTS DID- AND ONE WAS A CATHOLIC NORTHERN IRISHMAN- WHO FOUGHT FOR KING AND COUNTRY TOO.

GET OFF YOUR ARRRSE, OPEN A BOOK AND PULL YOUR BLOODY FINGER OUT AND STOP YOUR WHINING MAGGOT!
1) Having to fund it

2) It shows a class system. Just because someone is born into the family, they instantly become a prince/princess and have a life of luxury that we have to pay for. If it wasn't a good life then more would renounce their thrown.

3) They're not elected, so you can have any idiot be the King/Queen of your country.
There are too many scroungers in the Royal family, it should just be the queen and no one else. You would all see how much money this country would really have if there was not so many scroungers raking our tax money.
They get worshiped like they walk on water, for doing f*ck all, all year.
GOD SAVE THE QUEEN...
Would you really rather have TB or people of his ilk as president..??
