Lately I've been curious to know, as Americans, what percentage of our ancestors came to this country by arriving through New York City? -- Obviously many arrived through a few other places such as Louisiana or Florida. -- I'm of mostly Italian descent, and I've seen my father's surname on Ellis Island. But I think that which country your ancestors came from has something to do with it? Italians are very concentrated throught the Northeast of course, as well as Irish. But does anybody know a percentage of how many Americans can say that all or some of their ancestors arrived through NYC, and not various other ports throughout the country?
Answer:
Over 50% of Americans can trace at least one relative that entered the United States through Ellis Island.
