U.S. Green Card Through Marriage?
Answer:
If you are legit with a clean record it is not worth the extra thousands you will pay a lawyer. There is nothing a lawyer can do for you that you can do for yourself. It will not speed things up either. Once the papers afe filed thay all go in the same pile and are taken in that order.
Funny thing to me is my wife and I did it ourselves and it only took a year and a half. Some other friends got a lawyer and they are moving past 3 years now. They had no issues and it took longer.
I will tell you this. Once you file do not call them to check on your status. Everytime you do they pull your file and it goes on top of the pile again. So if you call after 6 months you will end up loosing that 6 months.
I did it on my own for my filipina wife. Your husband simply needs to file for a fiance visa on your behalf. It takes forever and a day, but you don't need a lawyer. They seem to approve anyone who applies as long as they're not felons or bringing 3rd-world diseases into the country.
As a Canadian, you have a pretty good chance, plus you have a much easier time popping over the border for a visit.
Hire a lawyer if one of you is on legal trouble; if not just do it by yourself, it's not a science and they tell you step by step what you need to do; a lawyer wont make things go faster or easier, just more costly.
Beware or lawyers promising citizenship, that's an old scam.
p.d. And I woud like the previous user to explain us: What are 3rd-world diseases?
save your money, i know people that got married and got their green card that didn't hire a lawyer
Save the money, do it yourself. The forms are easy and self-explanatory. The forms are meant to be filled out by a layman. Why waste $2,000 on an attorney?
yes you can file ur self make the right form it take 1 to many years good luck
