Over the last year, hundreds of thousands of illegal alien demonstrators took to the streets lobbying for amnesty. Marchers waved "Amnestia Ahora!" placards in one hand, the flags of their native countries in the other. Open-borders strategists quickly replaced the foreign flags with Old Glory after militant activists caused a public backlash last year. National newspapers played dutiful propagandists and splashed patriotic photo-ops of the "undocumented" masses wrapped in red, white and blue to drum up sympathy
But now that they've lost their amnesty fight, will they still embrace American symbols and traditions? Or was it all for show? And what of all that talk of illegal aliens being willing to study citizenship and civics? And take English classes? Why must they be bribed with the promise of a temporary guest worker visa and mass governmental pardon in order to adapt to our way of life? When did assimilation become the means and not an end in itself?
The inflection point can perhaps be traced to the moment when politicians were permitted to invoke the "America is a nation of immigrants" platitude as a mindless justification for open borders.
Our policy as a country should be one of firm Americanism: of making new arrivals American in conduct, spirit and loyalty. We are first and foremost a nation of laws. Foreigners as the Founding Fathers recognized, need to adapt to our way of life, not the other way around..Read more @ link

Cosmo, It's actually racist to put a foreign culture before the culture of a host nation. This was the guideline discuss by the UN, an international board. When Entering a nstion one must respect the culture and hold it above your own.
I live in L.A. and it can get ridiculous out here. I got yelled at meeting a restauranteer because he's Thai and I touched my head. I had a female cry on my shoulder for hours, because two men harass her when she was made in charge of her section. Latin Machismo took over these two and attacked her for months on end. An Eqyptian supervisor was allowed to assualt me and my coworker, because EEO believes that in their culture its alright to push a subordinate, so it's ok to do it in the US. some part of all culture is incompatible with ours. When this occurs, our culture should dominate.
Should we tolerate religion who is intolerant of our own beliefs? SHould we tolerate culture who treats females as inferior? Should we tolerate culture that support self mutilation?
I may have taken extreme examples, but some here won't listen about the more moderate abuses.
Thwere was a bill in congress which would have supported assimilation.and the right wing xenophobes listened to wacko nazi talk radio, and prevented it from apssing...(for now)

Indeed, that is why there are limits on the number of immigrants that are legally allowed to enter our country on a regular basis. The advocates of illegal immigration (with the exception of the actual illegal immigrants, who fully understand it) don't recognize that there is a problem with the immigrants coming in at the rate that they have entered our country because of that very thing.
Stop your hate campaign against Latinos! Most Latinos do speak and understand english. There is a lot of ignorance and mis-information like last year Gov. Arnold in California said that "Mexicans must assimilate" and learn to speak good english like him. First of all, he said this in Chinatown in a town full of Chinese signs and Asians who barely spoke english. Why didn't he tell them to assimilate? And second, the man is a rich millionaire and speaks horrible english.

The American flag waving by these non-Americans was all a show. The first words out of your mouth are usually the most accurate. The flags they were carrying during the first rally was the most accurate symbol of where their loyalties lie, where their hearts lie, and that this is a land they wish to conquer for their native land to take over.

There has NEVER been one way of life in this country. Life in New Orleans has been different from life in Chicago which has been different than life in Maine, which has been different from Life in New Mexico, or Alaska or Hawaii.
