It's taken them 11 years to build 14 miles of fence? Can there be any legitimate debate about the failings ?

SAN DIEGO - Bulldozers are rolling again on the U.S.-Mexico border, moving hundreds of tons of dirt to make way for a 16-foot steel fence in an area that once was the most popular crossing for illegal immigrants.
But before the construction resumed recently, the 14-mile project in San Diego was stalled for years by legal challenges from environmentalists, budget problems and difficulties buying land. Those delays are now raising doubts about a government plan to extend fencing to 370 miles of the Mexican border.
The Bush administration, under pressure to tighten border security, wants all 370 miles done by the end of next year.
"If past experience is any guide, it will cost a lot more than anyone expected and take a lot longer than anyone is talking about right now," said David Shirk, director of the University of San Diego's Trans-Border Institute, which studies border issues.
The Homeland Security Department has yet to say where it will build fences in California, Arizona and New Mexico. And the only proposal made public so far — for Texas — drew immediate criticism and is being reworked. Opponents worried it would limit access to the Rio Grande, damage the environment and infuriate Mexicans who cross the border to shop and visit. We built the Panama Canal in 11 years.
We put a man on the moon in less than a decade. And these guys are telling us that at their current rate it's gonna take them 50 years to build a fence?
Answer:
It does not matter how many problems you have a that little progress is telling the illegal immigrants "we are waiting on you, come on in, the americans that are already here have to complain before we finish this". I mean come on my dad has heart disease and built a two bedroom one bathroom, kitchen and living room house in 9 months. so the government is just being lazy they are using their money that WE pay them for things that are just stupid. Even still, ievery time i go to a doctors office there is someone there on the medical card, and i am not racist, but they are usually immigrants that can not speak a word of english and also get cash assistance and food stamps as well. and i think to myself, my hard earned money at work right there. so they really really have no excuse they want to make the country better, finish the friggin fence, stop illegal immigration, stop making it so easy for illegal immigrants to get welfare and jobs, and start being jerks about it. duh
The "fence" was just a political ploy that Republicans passed last year to get elected. Every Election year they bring up some bill that has to do with immigration or "Mexicans". It's all dirty politics..mixed with racism.
Wrong....the money was only approved last year and 180 miles will be completed by September. Some of the hold up is coming from the ranchers and land owners that don't want it on their property. Other delays coming from environmental issues from the tree huggers.
Be patient it will be worth the wait to get it finished.
There's absolutely no doubt, the federal government is purposely stalling on this issue, and it's really not linked to any one presidental administration. It simply seems to be a taboo topic no matter which political affiliation the administration is associated with.
The American taxpayers have been funnelling money into the federal government with the hopes of tightened border security, but have received the bare minimun at best in regards to improvements. This is simply deplorable and frustrating.
Just stalling for time until the North American Union takes effect All the Mexicans know it is coming that is why they are so brazen and have the "in your face" attitude; backed by Bush and Gonzales. Were you aware what little bit of fence they have constructed has to be moved. They placed it 6 feet inside the Mexican border and Mexico wants it moved out of their country. Seems like a "stall for time" ploy to me!
There is something that isn't discussed on the major media. MEXICAN CORRUPTION! If the border is completely sealed up (However way it's done), it's like putting a lid on a boiling pot, pressure builds up until it blows. What that means is that with the open border, Mexicans are able to come across and then send money back home, taking pressure off the social situation over there. The Mexican politicians are free to continue diversion of stolen money into their pockets without having to worry about a grassroots uprising. Closing the border will cause a civil revolution. The U.S. would be in a dangerous position to have a war right across the border. (I'm not going to mention American business interests in this opinion, as that also drives the foot dragging for closing the border and can make for an interesting discussion here.) In any case, the border must be closed, be it the eventual cause of a war in/with Mexico, or protection for American citizens (of which this government is obligated to do) when/should a revolution happen down there..Where's Oli North when we need him??
Fences, minefields, snipers, helicopter gunships, or death beams won't stop them. What WILL work is eliminating the reason they come. They come for a better life, and only an idiot could blame them. But, if that was impossible in America, they wouldn't come to America. I'm 58, and have never had a job that didn't require information and documentation. US laws against hiring illegals should be so severe that a business would be alert and wary about hiring them. It should be impossible to enroll illegals in any school or social program. Any illness or police contact should mean deportation. There is only one way. A National ID card. And no, I don't like the idea at all. But really, it's academic. The government already has access to vast amounts of info on us all. Heck, my 85 year old dad, has prints from WW ll in some gov't file. So, an ID is just admitting what IS reality, and inevitable. After all, a social security number HAS become our national number for lots of stuff already.
