Should Conrad Black be allowed to re-apply for Canadian Citizenship?
Answer:
Hello,
I admit am a little biased here. I much prefered our closer ties to Britain prior to 1982. My old passport says I am a British subject and entitled to British embassy services where there's no Canadian one. As old Archie Bunker would have said on his slip on word, I never did like that Patriation Of The Constapation - it ruined many nice privilages.
No longer can we accept the most coveted medal in the world, The Victoria Cross. A Canadian can no longer recieve knighthood or sit in the House Of Lords. To add insult to injury, this might have gone unnoticed but old Primeminister Jean ( talk about a pot calling the kettle black) had to stick his nose into it and effect the outcome.
As another post says, he was aquitted on most of the charges and the most serious. He still has the appeal option and ths story is not over yet, though the future looks grim.
Had this been in Canada like the fiascos we had with executives in the past he just would have got his pee pee slapped, a stiff fine and out in a few months like Al Eagleson, the Cormiers etc. Americans are much heavier handed in their justice from this white collar to drug crimes. One year for something here translate to 15 years in the US.
That said I see no reason for continually kicking a man when he is down even if we are jealous of his lavish life and do not like his attitude at times. He was born here and is a citizen by birth. How many other Canadians (as we saw last year in Lebanon) can be Canadian one day, another nationality another and flip their alligience back and forth with impunity also.? Though they didn't proclaim it out to a camera, their hearts and attituded did just the same and they are never forced to choose one way or another from some mouthy politician.
I say let him re-apply and give him the passport.
Regards,
Michael Kelly
No he gave up his citizenship to sit in the House of Lords and now he is a convicted felon in the USA.
Does he want to? The jury acquitted him of almost everything, including the most serious charges.
He should be allowed to re-apply - and our government should be allowed to say "No".
